Overview

A bus monitor is a person who, under the direction of a bus driver, rides on a van or bus to transport school pupils or clients to and from school or designated locations. The monitor may also assist with private charter trips, work with loud or disruptive clients, or monitor special‑needs individuals.

• Monitor pupils and daily bus activities to ensure proper conduct and adherence to safety standards.
• Maintain attendance and ridership records, assign seating as necessary.
• Observe and learn established routes to assist substitute drivers with directional and routing support.
• Verify route turn‑by‑turn sheets, note any changes, and add directional or landmark notations as requested by the Operations Manager or Dispatcher.
• Track route timing (total time, stops, loading/unloading) to establish route efficiency.
• Ensure safe loading and unloading of students, including verifying seat‑belt usage.
• Assist the driver with sweeping and cleaning the interior of the bus.
• Establish and maintain effective communication with drivers, district personnel, students, and parents.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

• Comprehend and follow oral and written instructions.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and coworkers.
• Communicate clearly with students, drivers, school officials, and parents.
• Work outside in various weather conditions and tolerate moderately loud noise.
• Attend work on a regular and dependable basis.
• Pass all required state and/or federal background checks.
• Perform all essential job functions and comply with company policies and procedures.

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving history.
• Certificate of training in first aid and CPR (required by local contract).
• First aid endorsement of the special driver’s certificate or equivalent certification if required by local contract.

Getting on and off the vehicle to assist challenged riders; walking in parking lots, aisles, and around the bus for inspections.

Closing doors, pushing wheelchairs, opening emergency doors and equipment, handling windows.

Operating hand and foot controls, checking bus fluids, and securing seat belts.

Turning the steering wheel, shifting the transmission.

Driving a bus, announcing streets, talking with passengers, speaking on the radio.

Monitoring traffic conditions and reacting to signals, inspecting the vehicle, and watching for mechanical issues.

Stooping and stretching; lifting challenged passengers or wheelchairs into seats.

Assisting in emergency evacuations and supervising boarding and exiting of passengers.
