STANDARDIZED PATIENT TEMPORARY (PART-TIME)
A Standardized Patient (SP) is a trained individual who simulates real medical conditions, symptoms, and scenarios in encounters where medical students practice clinical skills, communication, and patient interaction. SPs must consistently and accurately portray trained cases including typical emotions, behaviors and patient histories. Case portrayals often include a physical examination of the SP. Standardized Patients assess learners using specific measurement tools and may provide feedback on learners’ communication skills.
PositionSummary
The role requires the ability to recall case details and simulate all aspects of scenarios, including a patient’s chief complaint, history, affect/behavior and physical symptoms, in a standardized, repeatable, and accurate manner. The SP will provide students with constructive feedback and assist them in developing communication and clinical skills.
Required Qualifications- Ability to recall case details and simulate all aspects of scenarios in a standardized, repeatable, and accurate manner.
- Demonstrated ability to complete assessment checklists and recall learner performance.
- Ability to accept ongoing feedback from a supervisor and incorporate it into case simulation.
- Dependable and punctual.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to provide students with constructive feedback following Standardized Patient Program guidelines.
- Comfortable with repeated physical examinations performed on oneself.
- Comfortable wearing a hospital gown with undergarments while being video recorded.
- Proficient in the use of e‑mail for communication and scheduling.
- Open and flexible schedule.
Experience as a standardized patient, acting experience, or health/medical field training.
Duties & Responsibilities- Present case history in response to questioning by the student.
- Undergo a limited physical examination at the student’s direction.
- Assist students in developing their communication and clinical skills.
- Assist students in working through difficult emotional situations in a safe environment.
- Wear a hospital gown while on camera or observed live; perform physical examination maneuvers as required.
- Disclose any physical health conditions contradicting the assigned case.
- Stand, sit, walk, bend, reach, and lift as needed.
