Position: NETWORK ENGINEER I/II/III

Position Summary

The Network Engineer is responsible for all aspects of the operation of the campus network, including installation, configuration, documentation, service records, troubleshooting, routine preventive measures, security, and stability. This role is part of a team supporting both wired and wireless networks on the main campus and CMU’s remote locations. The engineer is a primary resource for technical support and maintenance concerns, ensures that the network and related procedures adhere to organizational goals, values, and standards, and promotes excellent teamwork and communication with all team members.

Required Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience that equates to two years.
  • IT experience related to the installation, configuration, modification, and support of networked systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain preventive maintenance schedules.
  • Familiarity with networking capabilities of Windows, macOS, Linux, and other systems.
  • Working knowledge of the latest wireless technologies.
  • Knowledge of routing protocols (OSPF, RIP, BGP, etc.).
  • Understanding of WAN technologies.
  • Exceptional troubleshooting, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Positive attitude and willingness to be on call.
Additional Qualifications (Levels II & III)
  • All Level I qualifications plus:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent (Level II); five years of relevant experience (Level III).
  • Experience with low- and high‑complexity applications such as IPAM, SNMP, DNS, DHCP, wireless, firewalls, NAC, ADC, and high‑availability configurations.
  • Ability to partner with cross‑functional teams, manage projects, and recommend system improvements.
  • Experience with scripting/programming (e.g., Ansible) for automation.
  • Advanced knowledge of security practices, including ACLs, IDS/IPS, Net Flow, VPN, DNSSEC, IPSEC, IPv6, and VoIP.
  • Experience with Palo Alto, Cisco Meraki, ASA firewalls, and F5 load balancers.
  • Knowledge of Cisco and Aruba wireless systems, Clearpass, and wireless troubleshooting.
  • Documentation, technical writing, and database administration skills.
  • Leadership and communication with stakeholders.

  • Relevant industry certifications.
  • Creative problem‑solving and ability to work under deadlines.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Install, maintain, and troubleshoot network devices such as switches and routers.
  • Implement IT security procedures.
  • Use diagnostic tools to identify, diagnose, and repair complex problems affecting network performance.
  • Maintain documentation concerning network configuration, operating procedures, and service records.
  • Provide support to students and staff on wired and wireless networks.
  • Act as internal and external consultant for complex projects.
  • Analyze existing systems, recommend changes, and develop policies for firewalls, router ACLs.
  • Guide system development and implementation, sometimes acting as project manager.
  • Develop automation and scripting to streamline network operations.
  • Participate in long and short‑range technology planning.
  • Conduct training and teaching sessions as required.

Pay Range

$62,000 – $90,000

Work Schedule

Monday‑Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., occasional additional hours as needed
