Position: COORDINATOR / RISK MANAGEMENT, ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH & SAFETY

Coordinator / Risk Management, Environmental Health & Safety

Under general supervision, develops, implements and maintains environmental, health and safety programs in support of the University's mission and in compliance with university policies, procedures, state and federal regulations and standards to ensure the environmental health and safety of students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Works in coordination with campus community while providing guidance and consultation to university personnel regarding hazardous waste/hazardous material response, industrial hygiene, indoor air quality, environmental compliance and other related activities.

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree, preferably in environmental health and safety, public health, chemistry, biology or physics. Effective written and verbal communication skills, including experience with group presentations. Demonstrated computer experience with business software applications, including MS Word, Excel and/or Access. Ability to work varied hours depending on campus activities, training schedules, etc. Ability to pass a HAZMAT medical examination and be medically qualified to wear respiratory protection devices.

Demonstrated ability to build rapport, communicate effectively and project a positive image. Ability to lift 50 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications
- One year of experience directly related to the environmental health and safety discipline. Knowledge of established state and federal standards and codes, particularly MIOSHA/OSHA, EGLE/EPA & DOT. Knowledge of use and operation of health and safety monitoring/testing equipment including but not limited to air monitoring equipment and personal protective equipment. OSHA HAZWOPER Technician training. Experience working in a higher education environment.

Database experience. Qualified to sign hazardous waste manifests. State of Michigan asbestos inspector accreditation. American Red Cross First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation & Automated External Defibrillator trainer.

Duties & Responsibilities
- Manages the University's Hazardous Waste program, including but not limited to pick up, transport, segregation, characterization, sampling, packing/over packing and disposal of hazardous materials/waste. Determines the University's generator status. Perform general labor at the University Collection Facility including site set up, clean up, facility maintenance, inventory, routine inspection, bulking, unloading and lab packing of hazardous wastes. Inspecting/auditing of University facilities to ensure compliance with various regulatory agencies such as MIOSHA/OSHA, EGLE/EPA and DOT.

Defines & assists with scope of work for potential contracts for building demolition or renovation and other chemically contaminated property including sampling, testing, removal, decontamination, and disposal. Coordinates special waste disposal projects including but not limited to, the handling of toxic materials, PCBs, hazardous chemicals and mixed waste. Develops and conducts training programs in the areas of Risk Management, Environmental Health & Safety including but not limited to, first aid/CPR/AED, hazard communication, HAZWOPER, lead, poly-chlorinated biphenyls, and other topics as assigned.

Advises management on potentially hazardous materials/wastes and makes recommendations as required. Maintains records such as hazardous and non-hazardous waste manifests and associated documents. Respond appropriately to spills and releases of hazardous wastes by either performing containment and clean up or activating emergency response protocols. Collaborates across specialties with the other RMEH&S professional staff, including but not limited to, training, accident investigations, indoor air quality assessments, report writing and written plan development/auditing.

Conducts Indoor Air Quality assessments as assigned. Ensures regulatory compliance of hazardous waste accumulation and storage areas. Performs other duties as assigned.
