Position Summary

Performs skilled work in the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems in addition to HVACR controls and energy management systems.



Required Qualifications

Education equivalent to completion of an Associate's Degree in HVAC.

Five years of work experience in commercial HVACR.

Possession of Type II or IV Refrigerant Handling Technician Certification.

Possession of a valid driver's license.

Ability to obtain a cooling tower treatment, category 5B pesticide applicator certification within one year of employment.

Working knowledge of HVACR controls and the ability to install/adjust digital and pneumatic control circuits.

Working knowledge of computer controls and related equipment.

Ability to work independently and in a team environment and provide a high level of service excellence to campus customers.

Ability to work from blueprints, drawings, and sketches.

Ability to effectively use technology to access e-mail and the internet.

Demonstrated ability to follow and/or interpret oral or written directions.

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and project a positive image.

Demonstrated positive interpersonal skills.

Ability to become an approved driver under the university's vehicle policy.

Ability to be on-call.

Ability to lift 75 pounds.

Ability to safely use a ladder and scaffolding.

Ability to work in permitted/non-permitted confined spaces and areas with limited egress.

Ability to safely use power equipment and hand tools.

Ability to work outdoors in all seasons.

Preferred Qualifications



Experience with MIOSHA safety regulations.

Experience with steam systems, steam traps, and food service equipment.

Duties & Responsibilities

Plans and performs a wide variety of skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, and environmental control equipment (both electronic and pneumatic) and related systems.

  • Heating includes but is not limited to, gas fired boilers, furnaces, and roof top equipment.
  • Ventilating includes but is not limited to, make-up air systems, laboratory and kitchen hoods, and general exhaust.
  • Air conditioning includes but is not limited to, direct expansion air condition such as electric, unitary equipment, roof top units and chillers, steam absorption chillers with cooling towers, and associated equipment.
  • Controls include but is not limited to, pneumatic and digital direct controls and circuits up to 480 volts.
  • Refrigeration includes but is not limited to, reach-in and walk-in coolers and freezers, including ice machines and soft service ice cream machines.
Performs routine maintenance and required repairs on steam traps and steam systems; serves as a backup to kitchen equipment mechanics on food service equipment repairs.

Responsible for the adjustment and maintenance of HVAC controls and computer interfaces in assigned buildings.

Analyzes HVACR and related mechanical system performance issues using TAB (testing/adjusting/balancing) techniques and control system analysis.
Maintains, Repairs, And Replaces The Following

  • Water pumps, bearings, valves, fittings, and related systems.
  • Fans, bearings, blowers, mounts, and related systems.
  • Steam condensate receivers, pumps, piping, and related systems.
  • Compressed air systems and related systems.
Performs preventative maintenance and lubricates related equipment.

Maintains telephone and radio contact with campus, outside vendors, and contractors as necessary.

Maintains a positive image with customers, vendors, and peers.

Maintains cleanliness of environmental system, spaces, mechanical rooms, and equipment.

Plans work and obtains necessary materials, equipment, and supplies.

Operates all required tools and equipment to include but not limited to power equipment, hand tools, and multiple electronic and analog meters.
