Position: Transportation Engineering Associate I (61031942)

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Resident Maintenance Engineer (RME) in supervising the encroachment permit process, including reviewing permits before submission to the RME and/or District for approval.
  • Supervise permit technicians and train them on the EPPS Permit System.
  • Assist the RME in supervising contractors and local municipalities working under encroachment permits and purchase orders.
  • Manage maintenance activities such as guardrail repair and installation, chip seal, resurfacing, full depth patching, pavement markings, and vegetation management, including gathering data for projects and preparing specifications and submittal packages.
  • Oversee existing permit work for QA/QC, erosion control, and traffic control.
  • Assist the RME with responses to the SCDOT web page and investigations of damage claims.
  • Assist the RME with Non-Federal and Federal Aid routes for resurfacing and support Sumter Construction in developing estimates for planned work.
  • Provide assistance during inclement weather conditions.
  • Serve as an assistant to the shift supervisor to maintain records of activities, and coordinate crews and equipment to accomplish necessary work.
Qualifications
  • A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
  • A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.
Physical Demands

The essential functions of this position involve sitting or standing for extended periods of time and may require traveling, bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling. The position requires driving and walking for extended periods, traversing rough and uneven terrain, working in close proximity to moving traffic, and handling natural environmental hazards. Work may be required outside of normal work schedules, especially during inclement weather and/or departmental emergencies, and may involve overtime, nighttime, and weekend hours.
