Full Time, Monday – Friday & As Needed / Pay based on qualifications

Purpose of Classification:

The purpose of this classification is to protect life and property, deter criminal activity, and enforce all local, state, and federal laws, statutes, and regulations. Incumbents in this classification interact daily with community members to build trust, inform them about the police department’s work, and build community partnerships. They provide residents and business owners with crime prevention tips and best practices to keep them safe and their property secure.

The individual in this role promotes community relations between the police department and the public.

• Enforces all applicable traffic and criminal codes, ordinances, laws, and regulations to protect life and property, prevent crime, and promote security.
• Coordinating and conducting community meetings such as Neighborhood Watch, Business Watch, and informational workshops.
• Conduct biannual drug takeback events and help monitor the prescription drug drop-off box in the police department lobby.
• Serve as a supplemental resource to aid patrol teams with issues requiring more advanced problem-solving and long-term efforts to decrease criminal activity.
• Conduct safety and welfare checks for senior citizens; receive and review the list of senior citizens on the watch list; make phone calls and visits; plan quarterly lunches; and organize the annual Thanksgiving lunch.
• Assist residents and businesses with safety and security surveys utilizing Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED).
• Organize and plan events that improve police and community relations, such as National Night, Annual Golf Tournament, Superhero 5K, Gregg’s Groceries, and Police Summer Camps. Develop new community outreach programs to address community issues and build relationships with community members and local organizations.
• Coordinate the Citizen’s Police Academy to help community members learn about the Fountain Inn Police Department operations and activities.
• May be required to assist with the department’s efforts in enforcing underage drinking laws through the Multi-Jurisdictional Alcohol Enforcement Unit.
• May be required to serve as bailiff duties during terms of court.
• Perform active patrol duties as assigned: patrol designated areas to detect and deter criminal activity; respond to calls relayed by dispatchers; write citations; apprehend, arrest, and process criminals, fugitives, and offenders as appropriate; and provide assistance and backup support to other officers and agencies as necessary.
• Follow safety procedures, utilize safety equipment, and monitor the work environment to ensure the safety of employees and other individuals. Perform driving functions safely and efficiently under various conditions, including day/night hours, in congested traffic, in adverse weather conditions, and in emergencies involving speeds in excess of posted limits. Inspect and maintain the assigned police vehicle, uniform, weapons, and equipment.
• Attend shift meetings, training sessions, and seminars as required to stay knowledgeable of departmental operations, promote improved job performance, and stay current with changing policies, procedures, codes, and criminal/civil case law; read professional literature; and maintain professional certifications and affiliations.
• Process a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations within designated time frames and per established procedures. Prepare or complete various forms, reports, correspondence, and other documentation; compile data for further processing or use in preparing department reports; and maintain computerized and hardcopy records.
• Operate a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review, or modify data using word processing, spreadsheets, databases, Internet, e-mail, or other software; and operate general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.
