Research Scientist
This employee will be tasked with assisting the SCDNR Archaeologist in archaeological investigations on Cultural Heritage Preserves and other SCDNR properties.
Responsibilities- Assisting the SCDNR Archaeologist with conducting both regulatory compliance and research oriented cultural resource work on Cultural Heritage Preserves.
- Conducting Phase I survey, Phase II/III testing and assessment, site mapping, artifact processing, analysis, curation, and providing contributions to technical reports.
- Assisting Cultural Heritage Preserves Manager with installation and maintenance of new and existing features on Cultural Heritage Preserves around the state (i.e., trails, kiosks, parking lots, signage, ADA compliance, etc.).
- Completing monthly reports of management/archaeological investigation activities.
- Entering semi-monthly working hours/time into SCEIS.
- Completing monthly mileage trip log, and all other required paperwork and electronic forms by due dates.
- Managing archaeology program equipment room and storage trailer.
- Tracking equipment usage and maintaining inventory.
- Developing educational programs for the Cultural Heritage Trust Program.
- Developing innovative, interesting, and substantive programs focused on primitive skills and prehistoric technologies.
Master's degree in Anthropology (with a concentration in Archaeology); or bachelor's degree in anthropology or archaeology (with a concentration in Archaeology) and two (2) years of professional experience in field archaeology, land management, or experience relevant to the job. Competency with magnetic compass navigation, GPS, GIS (Trimble, ArcGIS 10), land survey equipment (total stations) is desired. Experience in archaeological survey methodologies, site testing and data recovery.
Experience in processing and analyzing artifacts in a supervised laboratory setting. Familiarity with South Carolina's prehistoric and/or historic-period artifacts. Ability to perform strenuous outdoor work (i.e., archaeological excavation) under harsh weather conditions, occasionally work long days and the ability to walk long distances per day carrying job-related equipment and personal supplies. Ability to work and maintain good working relations with the public, technical field, office staff, managers, and administrative staff.
Ability to work within a group or individual setting, completing all delegated tasks as required by supervisors within a specified timeframe. Ability to talk with the public and answer questions in various settings (i.e. field, laboratory, and meetings.) Possess writing and communication skills in order to effectively communicate with staff, supervisors, and the public. Organized and detail oriented with a responsive nature to meet deadlines.
Willingness to learn new laboratory applications which include but are not limited to: an integrated online database, artifact processing and artifact analysis techniques. General knowledge of MS Office applications - Excel spreadsheet skills preferred. Ability to operate 4x4 vehicles, and conduct field work which may include the operation of various field equipment (i.e., chainsaws, weed eaters, lawn mowers, tractors, wood chippers, power tools, motor boats, canoes/kayaks and ATVs) in a safe and responsible manner.
Ability to lift heavy objects. Experience pulling, backing, loading equipment on and maintaining trailers. Experience with chainsaw operation including: felling trees, bucking logs, basic saw repair and upkeep. Experience in operating boats including canoes and kayaks, this includes experience loading and unloading motor boats, pulling and backing boat trailers and troubleshooting boat malfunctions. Coastal boating experience desired. Experience in carpentry is desired.
Ideal applicants should have a working knowledge of plant, tree, and animal identification. Individual should be able to traverse difficult terrain and long distances on foot while carrying equipment and tools. Ability to read maps and land survey plats. Job requires strenuous outdoor work under harsh weather conditions and occasionally long work days. Willingness to obtain Herbicide Applicators License, Prescribed Fire Manager Certification, CPR/AED Certification, and Wilderness First Aid Training.
