ResponsibilitiesArchaeologists are responsible for the day‑to‑day management of one or more projects, from the proposal through curation. On most projects, they serve as the primary point of contact for clients, agencies, the public, media, subcontractors, and office staff throughout the life of a project. In addition to these direct lines of communication, they are responsible for setting up and managing projects in Otis (Brockington's project management software), including the Project Summary page, Workflow (with appropriate weights, tickets, project blog, the project team, and flags) to ensure that the project team and finance department stay informed.
In the field, archaeologists are responsible for executing the research design and for the collection, storage, and transfer of field data—including artifacts, notes, photographs, GPS files, and other associated records—to the appropriate lab or GIS personnel. Safety is everyone's responsibility; however, the archaeologist is responsible for creating and disseminating the Job Safety Analysis (JSA) for each project. It is critical that the archaeologist lead by example with respect to their work ethic, judgment, technical expertise, and health and safety.
Archaeologists should be active participants in their professional development, including continuing education, training, and participation in professional conferences. They should have a good balance of academic and applied experience, be active in the professional community, and stay current with research trends to generate appropriate research designs and work plans. As they gain experience, we expect archaeologists to develop one or more areas of specialization.
Strong technical writing skills are required.
