Description Archaeologist / Project Manager – Entry/Mid-Level

Brockington and Associates is seeking a field archaeologist and project manager based in our Charleston, SC office for archaeological field work throughout the US.

Minimum education: MA/MHP/MS in archaeology, anthropology, history, or historic preservation.

Minimum experience: Two to four years of experience managing archaeological field projects.

You must have the ability to:

  • Prepare and execute detailed research designs;
  • Conduct fieldwork - including archaeological survey, testing, and data recovery investigations;
  • Lead projects, including field, lab, and reporting efforts, as Principal Investigator;
  • Identify prehistoric and historic artifacts and features in the field;
  • Effectively discuss projects with colleagues, clients, and review agencies;
  • Prepare and manage budgets and schedules; and
  • Write professional technical reports and publications.

You should have an applied knowledge of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Actand a working familiarity of other environmental statutes and regulations. Travel, physical labor, and time spent in outdoor conditions are requirements of this job. Strong writing skills are preferred.

You must be able to work as a member of a diverse team, manage projects and people, and complete other delegated project tasks. You should possess strong communication skills, to work professionally with clients and government agencies, and be able to supervise the work of others.

Requirements

Archaeologists are responsible for the day-to-day management of one or more projects, from the proposal through curation. On most projects, Archaeologists serve as the primary point of contact for clients, agencies, the public, media, subcontractors, and office staff throughout the life of a project. In addition to these direct lines of communication, Archaeologists are responsible for setting up and managing projects in Otis (Brockington’s project management software).

This includes the Project Summary page, Workflow (including appropriate weights, tickets, project blog, the project team, and flags) to ensure that the project team and finance department stay informed.

In the field, Archaeologists are responsible for executing the research design and for the collection, storage, and transfer of field data, including artifacts, notes, photographs, GPS files, and other associated records, to the appropriate lab or GIS personnel. Safety is everyone’s responsibility; however, the Archaeologist is responsible for creating and disseminating the Job Safety Analysis (JSA) for each project. It is critical that the Archaeologist lead by example with respect to their work ethic, judgment, technical expertise, and health and safety.

Archaeologists should be active participants in their professional development, including continuing education, training, and participation in professional conferences. Archaeologists should have a good balance of academic and applied experience. They must be active in the professional community and stay current with research trends to generate appropriate research designs and work plans. As they gain experience, we expect Archaeologists to develop one or more areas of specialization.

Archaeologists must be strong technical writers.
