OverviewServes as the BPS Training Sergeant, coordinating all training for BPS officers. Acts as the BPS Field Training Sergeant, liaison with the Department of Public Safety Training Unit and Criminal Justice Academy, and supervisor of the Field Training Coordinator.
Responsibilities- Coordinates all training for all officers of the Bureau of Protective Services.
- Supervises the BPS Training Unit, planning and implementing all training initiatives and goals directed by BPS Command staff.
- Ensures proper instructor staffing and that all instructors maintain required certifications and training.
- Serves as the BPS Field Training Sergeant and liaison, coordinating departmental and mandatory training to ensure recertification through the CJA.
- Coordinates the basic training of new officers and serves as direct supervisor while they complete the Criminal Justice Academy.
- Supervises the BPS Field Training Coordinator, managing the Field Training Officer (FTO) program for all new officers, coordinating schedules, and managing FTO documents and evaluations.
- Manages the BPS FTOs and ensures they are properly trained and certified.
- Assists the Critical Incident Team (CIT) Leader with initial training and provides assistance as needed during CIT deployment.
- Grasps training concepts and principles of team movement and maintains physical training standards.
- Provides law enforcement and protective functions throughout South Carolina as mandated by state law and conducts protective service duties at official meetings, work groups, public functions, hearings, and special task forces.
Minimum Requirements
- A high school diploma and experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency.
Minimum Requirements
- Basic law enforcement certification.
- Permanent status as a Bureau of Protective Services Corporal.
- Excellent command of BPS and Department of Public Safety policies and procedures.
- Knowledgeable of South Carolina Code of Laws, the BPS Operations Manual, and BPS Division Operations.
- Possess at least a Specific Skills Instructor certification and two Advanced Instructor certifications.
- Employee must work with minimum supervision.
- Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion when necessary.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Physically able to lift, bend, and stand for prolonged periods.
- Capable of restraining individuals who may pose a threat to the Governor and other public officials, state employees, and the general public.
- Ability to perform duties under all weather conditions.
