JOB SUMMARY: The Shop Foreman/Service Manager leads daily shop and service operations to keep company vehicles and equipment safe, reliable, and ready to support field production. This role uses a strong diesel mechanic and heavy equipment background to manage service priorities, preventative maintenance, jobsite equipment failures, mechanic assignments, parts coordination, work quality, internal customer service, vendor coordination, and communication with operations leadership.

While this position is not primarily responsible for performing repairs, it provides technical direction, instruction, coaching, and development for diesel mechanics while promoting the company mission:

DESCRIPTION OF TASKS
  • Promotes a service-focused shop culture that supports internal customers and field operations.
  • Schedules and monitors preventative maintenance, repair orders, inspections, service calls , and jobsite service needs to ensure timely completion and equipment readiness .
  • Directs, prioritizes, and assigns mechanics and technicians to repair orders, preventative maintenance, service calls, and jobsite equipment failures according to urgency, skill level, equipment needs, and production impact.
  • Serves as the first-line manager and primary shop contact for equipment failures on active job sites, assessing reported issues, determining repair priority, dispatching mechanics or service resources, and communicating status updates to operations leadership as needed.
  • Reviews assigned jobs daily, balances shop and field service demands and adjusts mechanic assignments as priorities change to support safe, efficient field operations.
  • Maintains current technical knowledge of equipment, vehicles, repair procedures, and shop practices in order to serve as a technical advisor and support mechanic development.
  • Provides training, coaching, technical instruction, and hands-on development support for diesel mechanics to strengthen diagnostic skills, repair quality, preventative maintenance practices, safety awareness, and overall technical growth.
  • Inspects the quality , accuracy, and timeliness of work performed by technicians and mechanics.
  • Coaches, motivates, and holds shop team members accountable for safe, productive, and professional job performance.
  • Monitors equipment maintenance and repair costs and supports cost-effective decisions that protect company assets.
  • Ensures response procedures are in place for equipment breakdowns so repairs are addressed quickly and lost production time is minimized .
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and efficient shop environment.
  • Inspects shop tools , equipment , and work areas regularly to confirm they are safe , maintained, and ready for use .
  • Works with the Safety Manager to ensure safety requirements , PPE use, and safe work practices are consistently communicated and enforced.
  • Works safely, wears required PPE and reports potentially unsafe conditions or practices promptly.

    Maintains productivity, professionalism, and focus throughout the scheduled workday.
  • Maintains personal appearance and conduct in accordance with company policy.
  • Demonstrates willingness to learn, support jobsite goals, and contribute to company-wide objectives.
  • Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.
PREREQUISITES FOR POSITION

Formal

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Skills Required:

  • Lead, delegate, prioritize, and coordinate people, equipment, parts, and service resources effectively.
  • Read, interpret, and apply maintenance manuals, repair procedures, schematics, diagrams, and technical information.
  • Use a strong mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and diesel equipment background to guide diagnosis, verify repair direction, and ensure repairs are completed safely, correctly, and timely by assigned mechanics.
  • Understand the safe operation, inspection, and maintenance requirements for shop tools, diagnostic equipment, vehicles, and heavy equipment in order to direct and support mechanic work.
  • Prepare, document, and communicate information clearly and accurately at the level required for successful job performance.
  • Maintain accurate work orders, service records, inspection documentation, and maintenance history.
  • Perform basic mathematical calculations needed for parts, measurements, estimates, and service documentation.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with mechanics, operators, foremen, managers, vendors, and other internal customers.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships across shop, field, safety, operations, and management teams.
