Position: Bus Driver (Academic Year), 60009709

Job Responsibilities Operates diesel or gas powered buses, cars or vans to transport students to and from home, on field trips and to health care or other facilities as needed. Ensures that students are transported in a safe and timely manner.

  • Performs pre-trip inspection before each trip, verifying that the bus is in safe working order. Makes sure that students are loaded properly and secured appropriately according to state and federal regulations. Accounts for all students and safely transport students to and from home and/or field trips. Obeys all traffic signals and highway regulations that govern the operation of school buses. Performs post trip inspections and reports any mechanical problems immediately to appropriate personnel.
  • Maintains bus for cleanliness and comfort. Washes bus on a regular basis ensuring that lights, mirrors and windows are clean. Cleans interior of vehicle upon completion of trip, removing all trash and unwanted materials. Performs light routine maintenance on equipment, reporting any problem areas or repairs needed. Properly maintains emergency equipment such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, body fluid kit, reflectors and web cutter.

    Refuels bus and checks fluid levels.
  • Assists in the behavior management of students, including completion of behavior reports. Communicates with parents, principals, and other staff concerning the student needs and/or concerns. Ensures that students are supervised at all times.
  • Ensures changes in student information such as address, phone numbers and pick-up permission has been reported and updated. Keeps bus notebooks current with route description, student pick-up permission, student contacts, emergency action plans, route schedule, late parent forms, behavior incident reports and medication forms.
  • Oversees the transport of medications for students. Makes sure snacks and water are available and distributed to students. Assists with loading and unloading of luggage.
  • Reports any changes in basic student information to the transportation office. Ensure that all medications, messages and monies are properly transferred and signed for.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

Current and valid CDL, School Bus Certificate and DOT Physical. An acceptable ten year driving history from the SC DMV under State Fleet Management (SFM) and SC Dept. of Education - Transportation (SCDOE-T) guidelines and policies. Experience in the operation or maintenance of motorized vehicles. This position may require communication modalities dependent upon employment placement.

Must maintain a valid SC Driver's License with proper endorsements for school bus operation and current DOT Health Card.
