Job Description

The special education teacher plans and provides appropriate learning experiences for students with disabilities in a variety of educational settings. The teacher is responsible for creating a flexible, effective program and learning environment that enables students to benefit from the general education curriculum to the greatest extent possible when supported with supplemental aides, accommodations, and other needed supports.

A key aspect of the role is identifying individual needs and creating a safe, stimulating, and supportive learning environment.

Critical skills for success include:

  • Collaborating with a team of professionals
  • Remaining calm while working with students who demonstrate significant behavior needs
  • Supervising and mentoring teacher assistants who work with students with disabilities
  • Belief that with effort, students can achieve their goals
  • Working closely with parents in a positive and collaborative manner
  • Handling students with significant cognitive, physical, emotional, and behavioral limitations
Education Required

Education: Bachelor's Degree

Certification Required

Certification: Special Education EC-12 or other appropriate certification

Experience Required

Experience working with special needs individuals in a school setting. Prefer 3 years teaching experience.

Physical/Mental Demands

Must be capable of working with students who have identified cognitive, physical, and/or emotional limitations; must be able to lift and participate in physical restraint.

Extracurricular Duties

As assigned.
