Position Summary:
The ICU Manager has comprehensive knowledge in nursing theories/practice, assesses, plans, implements/evaluates delivery of ongoing patient care and nursing practice accountability for specific department. Responsible for Quality Assessment and Improvement Program, provision of appropriate nursing care within guidelines, nursing care and effective utilization of resources. Proficient in leadership and interpersonal skills, assessment, and evaluation of event/variance with corrective action plans. Maintains patient care and nursing practice in accordance with policies and regulations, supports hospital goals, is knowledgeable about organization, human resources, financial and risk management, and functions effectively in emergency situations.
Works with Directors, House Supervisors, Physicians and staff, Chief Nursing Officer, and Administrator. Knowledgeable of education methodology for orientation, in-service and resource consulting on clinical nursing skills and practice, setting priorities, time management and patient/family education. Mentors Charge Nurses and Nursing Service staff appropriately and assumes responsibility for own professional development and performance skills.
- Maintains staffing pattern according to the staffing guidelines.
- Seeks out/obtains advanced knowledge, credentials, specialty exams, training and education.
- Functions in other unit roles and serves as a role model for clinical staff.
- Counsels and recognizes employees appropriately.
- Appropriately contacts Administrator.
- On-Call as necessary.
- Effectively copes with emergency situations and resolves them in a positive manner.
- Collaborates with physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals as appropriate.
- Conducts unit staff meetings on a regular basis.
- Recruits, interviews and selects staff for the patient care unit.
- Completes performance evaluations within its due date.
- Follows progressive disciplinary actions according to hospital policy.
- Complies and completes financial reports within the expected time frame including budget preparation.
- Consistently attends Nursing Council meetings and Department Managers meetings.
- Meets with physicians and discusses patient care issues, unit development, etc.
- Resolves complaints in a timely manner.
- Serves as clinical resource for other nursing units in absence of other Nurse Managers.
- Evaluates adherence to the Clinical Pathway (Clinical Indicators); takes corrective action.
- Works with the Chief Nursing Officer to augment clinical functions.
- Assumes patient advocate role, protecting patient’s rights.
- Participates with the Quality Department in the review of unit operations and preparation of regular statistical and narrative reports.
- Manages unit staff, including hiring, disciplining, discharging, performance review, orientation, and utilization.
- Ensures staff attendance at mandatory education and monitors safe practices and safety education.
- Initiates and actively participates as a change agent to improve the work environment, work processes, and patient care.
- Participates in continuous quality improvement initiatives.
- Maintains documentation of all quality improvement activities.
- Ensures utilization of all appropriate database reports in performance improvement activities.
- Adheres to and follows all patient experience initiatives.
- Reports to and departs from work on time and as scheduled.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Must be able to deal with stress while maintaining composure.
- Follows and adheres to TRMC vaccine policy(s) mandated by CMS.
- Five years of experience in an in-patient nurse setting preferred.
- Prior management experience in an in-patient setting preferred.
- Registered Nurse currently licensed to practice in the State of Texas required.
- BLS (Basic Life Support) required upon hire date.
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) within 90 days of hire date.
