Description:
The competent nurse in a critical care setting practices independently. Demonstrates awareness of all relevant aspects of a situation. Provides routine and complex care, working towards long-range goals. Continuously develops the ability to cope with and manage clinical contingencies. Makes appropriate assignments and delegates tasks to other care providers. Meets expectations of applicable competencies:
Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders. Consistent with the nursing scope and standards of practice, provides nursing care. Utilizes the nursing process, including assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, and evaluation. Addresses increasingly complex psychological, emotional, cultural, and social needs of patients and families. Administers medications and treatments according to the appropriate protocol. Monitors for side effects and effectiveness of prescribed treatments.
Documents patient history, symptoms, medications, and care provided. Assesses learning needs and provides education to patients, family members, and/or caregivers. Identifies issues and resources to support patient care. Expected to care for high-acuity ICU patients, including those who are intubated and sedated. Requires chest tube management and continuous critical care monitoring.
