Job Overview

The Railroad Rail Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining railroad equipment and mechanical systems used in rail operations. This includes tampers, ballast regulators, and all other maintenance of way equipment. The role ensures all equipment operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulatory and company standards.

Duties
  • Inspect, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical systems on locomotives, railcars, and maintenance equipment
  • Perform preventative maintenance on engines, braking systems, hydraulics, and other components
  • Diagnose mechanical failures using tools, testing equipment, and technical manuals
  • Repair or replace defective parts such as bearings, couplers, hoses, valves, and motors
  • Maintain and service track machinery (e.g., tampers, ballast regulators, rail grinders)
  • Conduct air brake inspections and repairs in compliance with federal standards
  • Use welding, cutting, and fabrication tools when necessary
  • Ensure all work meets safety regulations and quality standards
  • Document maintenance activities, repairs, and inspections
  • Assist with emergency repairs and breakdown response
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Experience in mechanical repair, heavy equipment, diesel engines, or railroad systems preferred
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems
  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and service manuals
  • Valid driver’s license (CDL may be required depending on role)
  • Willingness to work shifts, overtime, and on-call as needed
Technical Skills
  • Diesel engine maintenance and repair
  • Air brake systems knowledge
  • Hydraulic and pneumatic systems troubleshooting
  • Welding and fabrication (MIG, TIG, stick preferred)
  • Use of diagnostic tools and mechanical testing equipment
  • Preventative maintenance procedures
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift 50–100 lbs regularly
  • Frequent bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in confined spaces
  • Ability to work in loud, high-risk environments around moving equipment
  • Capable of working in extreme weather conditions
Certifications (Preferred or Required)
  • FRA (Federal Railroad Administration) compliance knowledge
  • Welding certification
  • CDL (Commercial Driver’s License)
  • OSHA safety training
  • Air brake certification
  • Shop-based and field-based work environments
  • Exposure to grease, oil, fuel, and mechanical hazards
