Job DescriptionThis role is hybrid remote with 60% monthly in-office presence in Mount Prospect, Illinois. (3 days in office per week).
The Senior Product Safety Engineer plays a critical role to ensure the safety of new power tools and safeguard end-users. This involves analyzing new product designs for power tools to identify hazards and risks in order to devise hazard-mitigation measures. The Senior Product Safety Engineer creates and maintains Product Safety Review for products, communicates product safety requirements to product development teams, and provides safety input to user instruction manuals and product warning labels.
The Senior Product Safety Engineer also mentor and train other safety engineers and project teams, create safety design guidelines and procedures and support investigations of field returns.
- Analyze new product designs and prototypes for user hazards, assess the risk, and develop the hazard mitigation requirements for innovative power tools.
- Document safety requirements in Product Safety Review and maintain throughout the development phase of the product.
- Communicate Product Safety requirements to project teams through meetings, calls, and emails.
- Read and critically review test reports to confirm product safety qualification requirements are met.
- Provide safety input, warnings, and instructions for user instruction manual, and review content provided by others for safety concerns.
- Create and mentor others for on-product warning label content per ANSI Z535.
- Review product photography, videography, and marketing artwork for accurate representation of reasonably safe use and compliance with operating instructions and warnings.
- Mentor and train other Product Safety Engineers.
- Train product development teams on Product Safety requirements and workflow.
- Create and update Product Safety procedures and design guidelines.
- Support product investigations for testing and field returns.
- Challenge product development team on appropriate hazard mitigation methods.
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience in technical-related discipline.
- Minimum 6-8 years of experience working in North American agency approvals (UL, CSA), regulatory compliance (CFR, OSHA), new product development for consumer products, or quality engineering for new product development. Experience analyzing and using power tools is required.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English, with ability to describe technical information to project teams.
- Strong understanding of North American product safety requirements for product design to ensure correct analysis for safety and compliance requirements.
- Culturally sophisticated awareness of how North Americans will use power tools on job sites, homes, and yards.
- Patient, and detail oriented with ability to proofread written instructions for logical errors, contradictions, or safety hazards.
- Familiarity with hazard identification and methods to document countermeasures.
