Job DescriptionThis role is hybrid remote with 60% monthly in-office presence in Mount Prospect, Illinois. (3 days in office per week).
The Product Safety Engineer plays a critical role to ensure the safety of new power tools and safeguard end-users. This involves analyzing new product designs for power tools to identify hazards and risks in order to devise hazard‑mitigation measures. The Product Safety Engineer creates and maintains the Product Safety Review, communicates product safety requirements to development teams, technical writers, and marketing.
Creates warnings for and approves draft user instruction manuals and product warning labels.
Responsibilities:
- Analyze new product designs and prototypes for user hazards, assess the risk, and develop the hazard mitigation requirements for complex power tools.
- Document safety requirements in Product Safety Review and maintain throughout the development phase of the product.
- Communicate Product Safety requirements to project teams through meetings, calls, and emails.
- Read and critically review test reports to confirm product safety qualification requirements are met.
- Provide safety input, warnings, and instructions for user instruction manual, and review content provided by others for safety concerns.
- Create on‑product warning label content per ANSI Z535.
- Review product photography, videography, and marketing artwork for accurate representation of reasonably safe use and compliance with operating instructions and warnings.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience in technical‑related discipline.
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience working in North American agency approvals (UL, CSA), regulatory compliance (CFR, OSHA), new product development for consumer products, or quality engineering for new product development. Experience with power tools is preferred.
- Excellent written and oral English communication skills.
- Ability to translate technical safety concepts into actions for project teams.
- Strong understanding of North American product safety requirements for product design to ensure correct analysis for safety and compliance requirements.
- Culturally sophisticated awareness of how North Americans will use power tools on job sites, homesand yards.
