Job Summary

This position performs technical engineering work in support of the Public Works Department, including surveying, drafting, construction inspection, and technical administrative tasks. The Engineering Technician assists engineering staff with the preparation of plans, specifications, and cost estimates, and performs field work to support the design, construction, and maintenance of public infrastructure projects.

Essential Job Functions
  • Perform basic technical work in support of Public Works Department engineering programs including survey, drafting, and technical administrative work; performs work within scope of authority and training in assigned area of responsibility; duties may vary according to job assignment.
  • Coordinate assigned project activities with other Public Works divisions, consultants, and developers.
  • Prepare technical plans, profiles, cross sections, specifications, and cost estimates; calculate and plot field survey data in the preparation of plans, profiles, and cross sections.
  • Collect and review material submittals for compliance with contract provisions and sound engineering principles.
  • Perform Traffic studies as assigned including deploying counter boxes and tubes.
  • Incorporate data collection from public infrastructure projects into work/asset management software applications.
  • Perform construction staking, topographical work, leveling, and other related surveying duties.
  • Assist in managing review and inspection of private utility permit program.
  • Assist in the work of a field survey crew; operate a full range of survey equipment including electronic measuring devices and other technical engineering equipment.
  • Maintain field notes of survey work performed; process survey information and generate designs and drawings for various engineering and planning projects.
  • Assist in the condition inspection of Village roads, bridges, and infrastructure; perform necessary calculations to facilitate construction staking layout of approved engineering drawings.
  • Assist engineering staff in the preparation of engineering designs, related drawings, specifications, and construction project estimates.
  • Inspect construction projects to verify compliance with relevant standards.
  • Operate a variety of trucks, equipment, and hand tools in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures; inspect vehicles and equipment and assure all equipment is maintained according to Village standards.
  • Provide information to the public, contractors, and consultants on Public Works projects and technical matters.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.
Basic Qualifications – Experience and Knowledge
  • Knowledge of basic civil engineering and surveying principles, practices, and methods.
  • Ability to perform technical drafting, design, and field survey work.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel; experience with AutoCAD and GIS software preferred.
  • Ability to interpret plans, specifications, reports, codes, and ordinances.
  • Ability to operate and maintain surveying instruments and related equipment.
  • Sound mathematical and analytical skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with contractors, consultants, coworkers, and the public.
Education and Training
  • Completion of an associate’s degree in civil engineering technology, construction management, or related field required.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in engineering, surveying, or construction inspection is preferred.
  • Must possess a valid Illinois Class D driver’s license or ability to obtain one within six (6) months of employment.
  • Must have a valid Class B driver’s license (CDL) from the State of Illinois or the ability to obtain one within six (6) months.
  • Or equivalent combination of education and/or relevant experience.
