Traffic Engineer (Transportation Engineer III)

Nature of Work- Assist the Team Leader and the Assistant District Engineer of Traffic in preparing highway construction projects for advertisement.
- Respond to citizen inquiries regarding traffic‑related concerns such as signs, pavement markings, flex posts, speed controls, sidewalks, crosswalks, streetlights, traffic signals, and other operational issues.
- Coordinate with SHA support divisions, engineering design consultants, other state and county agencies, and community representatives throughout project development.
- Participate in project development for programs including Major Projects (Funds 70, 71, 72), Safety and Resurfacing (Fund 77), Safety and Spot Improvement (Fund 76), Intersection Capacity Improvement (Fund 87), Crash Prevention Improvement (Fund 30), Urban Reconstruction (Fund 84), Retrofit Sidewalk Program (Fund 79), Bicycle Retrofit Improvement (Fund 88), District Engineer’s Quick Action, Drainage, Environmental Impact, Structures, Candidate Safety Improvement Location (CSIL), Wet Pavement/High Friction Surface Treatment, and other related initiatives.
- Education:
Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited college or university. - Experience:
Two (2) years of professional engineering experience. - Selective qualification:
One (1) year of that experience must involve traffic engineering. - One (1) year of professional engineering experience may be substituted for the required education.
- A master’s degree in engineering may substitute for one year of experience.
- Individuals currently registered as Professional Engineers in the state of Maryland or a comparable jurisdiction are considered to have met the education requirement.
- Licenses:
Valid motor vehicle operator’s license in Maryland.
Selected candidates may be required to attend evening community meetings or conduct peak‑hour traffic observations outside normal working hours.
