The Skilled Trades Specialist positions are front‑line employees responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the Division of Rehabilitation Services Headquarters, Workforce and Technology Center, and Automotive shop buildings; performing work necessary to ensure the building’s fixtures, mechanical equipment, systems and grounds are functioning properly and in good repair. This position is designated as emergency essential.
Responsibilities- Address daily work orders related to building maintenance, such as repairs or minor construction.
- Repair furniture and fixtures, trim work, cabinets and partitions.
- Repair or replacement of locks.
- Repair or installation of plumbing fixtures such as sinks, toilets, showers and washing machines.
- Installation of light fixtures, switches and outlets.
- Installation of industrial portable A/C units.
- Monitor building temperatures and diagnose or troubleshoot equipment malfunctions.
- Organize and schedule technical maintenance tasks and prepare operating efficiency reports.
- Perform preventive maintenance related assignments (including changing filters, lubricating electrical and mechanical equipment, cleaning sewer lines and traps, etc.).
- Perform maintenance and repair on various electrical equipment and fixtures.
- Operate central air conditioning plants and equipment, conduct safety inspections of boilers, and provide oversight to the cleaning, repair, and maintenance of furnaces and boilers.
- Prepare interior and exterior surfaces for painting (caulk, plaster, spackling, cleaning, scaffolding); apply various types of paints, coatings, and finishes.
- Repair exterior driveways and walks (filling potholes or cracks in cement).
- Inspect buildings and grounds for adherence to safety and sanitary regulations.
- Operate automobiles and pick‑up trucks for the purpose of transporting needed supplies and equipment.
- Operate power equipment to cut or shape parts.
- Assist with the moving of items/furniture and equipment for the purpose of room setups or maintenance‑related projects.
- Assist with emergency repairs as needed.
Education:
Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience:
Three years of experience performing skilled trade work in plumbing, carpentry, electrical, HVAC, locksmith, masonry, painting, or welding work.
- Candidates may substitute additional years of experience for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.
- Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher, as a non‑commissioned officer in utilities classifications or mechanical maintenance management specialty codes in utility systems repair, on a year‑for‑year basis for the required experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Skilled trades experience working in a commercial building setting.
- Professional training, union certification or completion of a certified/accredited training program in a skilled trade, apprenticeship program, or vocational school.
