Duties:- Assists students with disabilities with academic, behavioral, social and functional growth and development.
- Adapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the assigned teacher for the purpose of supporting students' IEPs.
- Implements instructional programs and lesson plans (e.g. reading, math, language comprehension, writing, computer, etc.) provided by and under the supervision of the assigned teacher for the purpose of reinforcing learning concepts.
- Promotes self-determination of students with disabilities.
- Documents students' daily activities (e.g. behavior, completed assignments, on/off task times, etc.) under the supervision of the special education teacher.
- Monitors individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings (e.g. rest rooms, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, assemblies, field trips, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
- Communicates with teachers and other district personnel for the purpose of assisting in evaluating student progress and/or implementing IEP objectives.
- Maintains classroom equipment and work area for the purpose of ensuring a safe learning environment or other mandated requirements.
- Demonstrates an understanding of students' disabilities and applies it to the responsibilities of the position.
- Models conversation, manners, activities, and everyday interactions in order to demonstrate appropriate social behavior.
- Demonstrates cooperation, openness for growth, and a willingness to contribute in a team approach.
- Communicates, collaborates, and cooperates with colleagues, supervisors, and students.
- Maintains confidentiality regarding all aspects of work with students with disabilities and other staff.
- Participates in all meetings, training programs, and in service sessions as assigned by the Special Education Coordinator/Administration to promote professional development.
- Supports and implements District policies and procedures, regulations, and administrative directives.
- Adheres to the ethical standards and codes of the profession and to the established rules, regulations, and laws governing special education.
- Under supervision, assist students (e.g. toileting, changing, feeding, etc.) for the purpose of providing required care for assigned students.
- Performs other related duties that may be assigned after the discussion with the Special Education Coordinator or Administration.
The Special Education Substitute Paraprofessional supports high school students (up through age 22) with disabilities under the direction of a certificated special education teacher by modeling the necessary skills to perform assignments; following educational and specific behavioral plans; modeling appropriate behaviors and interactions with students and staff; and assisting student by providing for special health care needs. Substitute Paraprofessionals in this classification will receive a variety of assignments including classroom support, one-on-one, etc.
Qualifications:- Must hold a valid IL paraprofessional license, substitute license, or teaching license.
- Associate's degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution of higher education; completed 60 semester hours of college credit at a regionally accredited institution of higher education; HS Diploma or GED and a score of 460 or higher on the ETS Parapro; or HS Diploma or GED and passing scores on the ACT Workkeys.
- Must be at least 19 years of age.
- Must have excellent Oral and Written communication skills to work with teachers, education support personnel, building administrators and the general public.
- Enforce school regulations and policies in a professional manner.
- Ability to maintain good working relationships with fellow employees and pupils.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Requires employees to have the ability to push/pull up to 10 lbs.
- Must be detail-oriented.
