Job Summary

The Horizontal Boring Machine (HBM) Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining horizontal boring machines to perform machining operations on metal work pieces according to engineering drawings and specifications. This role requires a high degree of accuracy, attention to detail, and the ability to read technical drawings.

Responsibilities

Set up and operate horizontal boring machines (manual or CNC) to bore, drill, mill, and face metal work pieces.

Interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and work orders to determine machine setup and sequence of operations.

Measure and mark dimensions and reference points on material or work pieces as a guide for subsequent machining.

Align and secure work pieces on the machine table or faceplate using clamps, bolts, or fixtures.

Select, install, and adjust tooling and cutting parameters for optimal performance.

Monitor machine operation and adjust feeds, speeds, and depth of cut as needed.

Inspect finished parts using precision measuring instruments (e.g., micrometers, calipers, dial indicators) to ensure conformance to specifications.

Perform routine maintenance on machines and tooling to ensure proper function.

Maintain accurate production and inspection records.

Follow all safety protocols and maintain a clean and organized work area.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent; technical training in machining or manufacturing is a plus.
Minimum of 2 years’ experience operating horizontal boring machines or similar heavy machining equipment.
Strong understanding of machining principles and metal cutting processes.
Ability to read and interpret complex blueprints and technical drawings.
Proficient in using measuring tools and gauges.
Familiarity with CNC controls is a plus.
Ability to lift heavy materials and stand for extended periods.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
Manufacturing or machine shop setting experience.
Exposure to noise, oil, metal shavings, and moving machinery.
Requires wearing PPE such as safety glasses, gloves, and steel-toed boots.
