Heavy Civil Construction Superintendent
This full-time Heavy Civil Construction Superintendent role is based in Westchester County, NY and focuses on overseeing field operations for heavy civil infrastructure and site development projects. The superintendent leads daily activities for excavation, underground utilities, grading, paving, and drainage work, ensuring that projects are delivered safely, on schedule, and within budget while maintaining high standards of quality and productivity. This position reports directly to the site and requires strong leadership, deep utility experience in water and sewer systems, and the ability to coordinate complex field operations on projects ranging from small to large scale.
Responsibilities- Lead and manage daily field operations on heavy civil construction projects, including excavation, grading, drainage, paving, milling, and underground utility installation.
- Supervise, schedule, and coordinate field crews, including Foremen, Equipment Operators, and Laborers, to ensure efficient and productive operations.
- Coordinate closely with Project Managers to plan work activities, develop and implement safety protocols, and organize project logistics and sequencing.
- Ensure full compliance with all safety regulations, site-specific safety plans, and company policies, promoting a strong safety culture on every project.
- Monitor project progress, budgets, and schedules, and provide regular, accurate updates to internal stakeholders and project leadership.
- Train, mentor, and develop field personnel to build strong, high-performing teams and support long-term workforce growth.
- Assist with survey work and field layout as needed to ensure accurate execution of plans and design specifications.
- Maintain high standards of quality control and workmanship on-site, ensuring that all work meets project specifications and industry standards.
- Communicate effectively with subcontractors, suppliers, and inspectors to coordinate work, resolve issues, and keep projects on track.
- Oversee utility construction activities, including water and sewer systems, drainage, and related underground infrastructure.
- Support construction management tasks such as change order coordination, RFIs, and documentation related to field operations.
- Collaborate with preconstruction and project teams to understand project scope, constraints, and means and methods prior to mobilization.
- Manage site construction activities for projects ranging from approximately $50,000 to over $50 million in value, adjusting management approach to project size and complexity.
- Ensure proper use and care of equipment and materials on-site, and coordinate with suppliers to maintain adequate resources for ongoing work.
- Work flexible hours, including some weekends, to meet project milestones and respond to field conditions or schedule demands.
- Experience in heavy civil construction, with at least 5 years in a superintendent role leading field operations.
- Proven leadership and team management skills, with experience supervising and developing field crews.
- Strong understanding of civil construction methods, heavy civil means and methods, and industry-standard safety practices.
- Demonstrated experience in utility construction, particularly water and sewer systems and related underground infrastructure.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting construction plans, drawings, and specifications for civil and utility projects.
- Experience with excavation, underground utilities, grading, paving, drainage, earthworks, and site construction.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, monitor project progress, and maintain schedules and budgets.
- Strong communication skills for effective coordination with Project Managers, subcontractors, suppliers, and inspectors.
- OSHA 10 certification and First Aid certification (required).
- Ability to work flexible hours, including some weekends, as project demands require.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for travel to and from project sites.
Skills & Qualifications
- OSHA 30 certification (preferred).
