Classroom Resources Specialist

Full-Time, Exempt

Overview:

The Education and Guest Services Division at George Washington's Mount Vernon provides meaningful learning opportunities for Mount Vernon's one million annual visitors and students in classrooms around the country. Through a diverse portfolio of interpretive experiences, engaging public programs, and online resources, we expand each learner's understanding of George Washington and the world in which he lived, and their relevance to today.

The K-12 Education Department is designed to ensure that Mount Vernon is focused on creating and providing the best learning experiences available to both students and teachers across the country. The department plays a major role in reaching students by creating robust classroom resources, providing signature student learning experiences, and designing and facilitating immersive teacher professional development programs through the George Washington Teacher Institute (GWTI).

The Classroom Resources Specialist is a key member of the K-12 team. They ensure Mount Vernon's mission supports formal K-12 classrooms across the country by providing diverse, research-based, high-quality classroom resources for students and teachers of all abilities and grade levels. The Specialist contributes expertise and guidance to all student- and teacher-facing work on the estate and online, and advises Senior Staff on the needs of the approximately 50 million students and 4 million teachers in the United States, who are both a priority audience for the institution and a key focus for achieving greater impact.

$50,000-$55,000/year

Position-Specific Responsibilities:

* Develop and publish differentiated K-12 classroom resources on Mount Vernon's education web pages to align with current educational trends, meet teacher and student needs across grade levels and abilities, and reflect current institutional goals.

* Audit, edit, organize, and curate existing K-12 classroom resources and web pages to evaluate for cohesiveness, accessibility, effective navigation, and opportunities for inquiry.

* Collaborate closely with external educational materials designers to produce print, online, and interactive digital K-12 classroom resources.

* Advise on the use of Mount Vernon's K-12 classroom resources on various mission-aligned partner websites in order to reach a wider audience.

* Manage the signature Teacher Fellowship Program through both long-term and short-term:

* Communication, networking, organizing, and training of multiple stakeholders, including interns, staff, participants, speakers, vendors, and volunteers, to deliver signature teacher learning experiences.

* Coordination and tracking of various program details, expenses, and logistics.

* Research, design, and publication of new K-12 classroom resources.

* Program budget, evaluation, scholarship, and strategies.

* Institutional alignment and development reporting.

* Co-develop and review K-12 promotional materials, including copy and graphics for e-newsletters, social media posts, and digital and print flyers during monthly and yearly cycles.

* Stay current on teacher and student learning trends in history, civics, and interrelated subjects and represent Mount Vernon in national conversations about K-12 classrooms and student learning at a variety of in-person and/or digital conferences and programs at the district, state, and national levels (approximately 3 times/year).

* Consult with current and past members and/or alumni of the Teacher Advisory Group, Student Advisory Board, GWTI Residential, Fellowship, and 250 Programs to gain insights into current teacher and student needs.

* Serve as a liaison between visiting teachers, students, institutional partners, and stakeholders as part of their on-site experiences at Mount Vernon.

* Provide expertise on programs, projects, and resources developed and led by various teams within the Education and Guest Services division to ensure alignment with current educational trends and institutional goals.

* Support institutional evaluation efforts to gain a research-based understanding of teacher and student needs and connections to Mount Vernon's mission as it relates to our education mission.

Qualifications and Requirements:

* Bachelor's degree in history, museum education, education, curriculum and instruction, and/or communication.

* Minimum 2 years of experience working with K-12 students and/or teachers in formal education, public history, museum education, history, and/or related spaces.

* Proven knowledge of and interest in George Washington and the American Revolutionary and Founding eras.

* Strong understanding and support of current trends and practices in education, education policies, history education, and/or social studies.
