Community Corrections Officer 2 (or CCO1 In‑training)
Location: Mount Vernon, WA
Salary: Monthy ranges: CCO1 ($4,603.00 – $6,190.00), CCO2 ($5,610.00 – $7,540.00). Salary depends on qualifications. Minimum starting salary for a CCO1 placement begins at Step G ($5,338.00/monthly).
Position OverviewThis full‑time, permanent role works for the Mount Vernon Field Office at 205 West Stewart Road, Mount Vernon, WA 98273. The officer will supervise individuals under community supervision, focus on accountability and intervention, and support safe reentry into the community. Shift: 0800‑1700 Monday‑Friday.
Responsibilities- Supervise criminal individuals ordered to community supervision under state law, interstate compact rules, and agency policy.
- Conduct investigations, searches, issue warrants, and make arrests.
- Complete intake, administer assessments (risk, needs, substance abuse), and maintain electronic and hard‑copy files and reports.
- Engage with supervised individuals using communication strategies such as Motivational Interviewing and Principles of Effective Interventions.
- Enforce supervision conditions and law, present accurate documentation and testimony, make sanction recommendations, and maintain proper chain of custody for evidence.
- Operate department‑issued firearms, maintain safety and security measures, and adhere to policies for firearm possession and use.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications – CCO1
- Ability to carry and properly utilize a department‑issued firearm.
- Unrestricted Washington vehicle operator’s license.
- Willingness and ability to work with individuals with criminal backgrounds and behaviors, review graphic materials, and remain objective.
- Demonstrated ability in at least three of the following areas (college‑level coursework or experience):
- Written Communication
- Critical Thinking
- Analytical Reasoning
- Conflict Resolution
- Situational Awareness
- Problem Solving
- Work Independently
- Flexibility
- Education and experience combinations:
- High school diploma or GED + at least 4 years of qualifying experience.
- Associate or technical degree + at least 2 years of qualifying experience.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
- Or equivalent combination totaling 4 years.
Required Qualifications – CCO2
- Ability to carry and properly utilize a department‑issued firearm.
- Unrestricted Washington vehicle operator’s license.
- Willingness and ability to work with individuals with criminal backgrounds and behaviors, review graphic materials, and remain objective.
- Demonstrated experience in at least three of the following areas:
- Field visits and onsite assessments
- Written correspondence, reports, and documentation
- Case assessment and recommendations
- Referrals to resources (e.g., chemical dependency, substance abuse)
- Court or hearing presentations
- Risk‑factor assessments
- Treatment plan design and monitoring
- Official record maintenance and progress tracking
- Support for individuals lacking independent access to community resources
- Case management decisions under stress
- Technical use of computer and software for data entry and retrieval
- Caseload management and prioritization
- Identification of community resources for treatment and programming
- Clear and concise communication with staff and external stakeholders
- Independent work and collaboration with system and community stakeholders
- Education and experience combinations:
- One year as a CCO within the Washington State DOC.
- Associate or technical degree + at least 3 years of qualifying experience.
- Bachelor’s degree + at least 1 year of qualifying experience.
- Or equivalent combination totaling 5 years.
- Complete felony disclosure form and criminal background check.
- Pass psychological screening (Battery Exam and Psychological Interview).
- Submit to drug testing per collective bargaining agreement and agency policy.
- Complete mandatory employee orientation and all training requirements.
- Familiarize with and comply with all department policies, procedures, and collective bargaining agreements.
