DescriptionThe Clinical Pharmacy Specialist will serve as the pharmacy representative in all aspects of care within the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). The role includes reviewing pharmacy policies and procedures related to drug use, ensuring readiness for regulatory audits, and overseeing formulary management. The specialist will provide drug‑related education, collaborate with hospital departments to evaluate and modify pharmacy services, and assist in training clinical staff and learners, including competency assessments.
Oversight of unit pharmacy team members and academic scholarship activities—such as authorship, presentations, and national meeting attendance—are also required. Additionally, the specialist will help create and execute collaborative practice opportunities at Children’s National.
Minimum Education
Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.
D.) – Required
Minimum Work Experience
• 2 years in a pediatric or academic/clinical setting.
• 6 years for candidates without a PGY2 residency.
Required Licenses and Certifications
• Pharmacist eligible for licensure in the District of Columbia (and may include Maryland/Virginia) – 90 days.
• Board Certified Pharmacist (BPS) – 1 year.
- Interpret medication orders, oversee packaging, labeling, distribution of medications.
- Input orders into the pharmacy computer system.
- Staff pharmacy operations to maintain distribution skills.
- Assist in unit inspections and accreditation readiness.
- Review medication lists for duplication, omissions, dosing errors, interactions, and allergies.
- Verify new medication orders for drug, dose, route, and frequency.
- Support nursing staff and other providers with automated dispensing machine queries.
- Perform drug therapy monitoring and intervene on dosing, administration, interactions, side‑effects, and monitoring issues.
- Complete therapeutic drug monitoring consults and adverse reaction reports.
- Document interventions and drug information.
- Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to ensure medication access and recommend alternatives.
- Participate in medication reconciliation to ensure a complete home medication list.
- Implement comprehensive medication evaluation and management across care settings.
- Educate, train, and supervise pharmacy students and residents.
- Train new pharmacists and provide lectures/drug reviews to professional groups.
- Develop system changes and educational programs to reduce errors.
- Ensure appropriate medication use organization‑wide.
- Identify drugs or therapies for further evaluation and formulary addition.
- Provide accurate, timely drug information to physicians, nurses, and other health professionals.
- Maintain evidence‑based clinical practice.
- Serve as a clinical specialist resource for pharmacists, nurses, and physicians.
- Assist in managing drug shortages and represent the department on key committees.
- Support pharmacy operations and informatics teams in formulary updates and implementation.
- Become credentialed and help design, implement, and execute collaborative practice agreements.
- Lead cost‑saving and quality improvement initiatives both internally and externally.
- Develop and test electronic order set builds.
- Assist in expanding clinical pharmacy programs.
- Engage in performance/quality improvement and patient safety activities.
- Identify high‑cost/high‑use agents and participate in cost‑management initiatives.
- Lead or participate in research initiatives with medical units or residents.
- Present or moderate at subject‑area conferences.
- Engage in preceptor development seminars and teaching.
- Publish primary literature or present posters.
- Anticipate and respond to customer needs.
- Demonstrate collaborative and respectful teamwork.
- Contribute to a positive work environment and process improvement.
- Make decisions with sound judgment and use resources efficiently.
- Promote safety for patients, families, visitors, and co‑workers.
