R&D / Mechanical Engineer Job Description About the role
We are seeking an innovative and driven R&D engineer to join our team. This is a hands‑on role that focuses on developing MagIC's novel point‑of‑care diagnostic platform. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in building and testing electromechanical systems including proven skills in mechanical design.
This role will help develop automated point‑of‑care bioassays. This entails improving existing benchtop proof‑of‑concept test instruments as well as developing new concepts and prototypes to bring designs from the benchtop to early manufacturing.
At MagIC, we are a highly integrated team. This role will collaborate heavily with our bioassay scientists, firmware and software engineers, and electrical engineers in order to bring the automated platform to clinical trials and beyond.
Responsibilities- Develop and implement test plans and protocols for engineering verification testing to assess performance and reliability of custom microfluidic cartridges and analyzer instruments
- Adjust current designs, prototype and evaluate mechanical, fluidic, and thermal electro‑mechanical subsystems
- Collaborate with scientists to translate and optimize bioassay processes into automated point‑of‑care devices
- Manage documentation (Schematics, CAD, engineering drawings, design rationale) for microfluidic cartridges and analyzer instruments
- Work directly with contract manufacturers for development of first generation product for use in pilot usability study and pivotal clinical trials
- Bachelor's degree or higher in mechanical or biomedical engineering
- 5 minimum industry experience in R&D, mechanical engineering, mechatronics, hardware engineering, robotics or automation
- Experience with Python, C, C#
- Strong analytical, critical thinking, and communication skills
- Rapid prototyping skills for mechanical design and electromechanical systems
- Expertise in CAD and engineering drawings
- Experience in a hardware startup environment
- Experience driving engineering verification testing
- Experience with design for manufacturing
