Senior Opto-Mechanical Design Engineer | Mountain View, CA
Location: Mountain View, California, USA
Employment: Full-time | On-site
We are looking for a hands-on Senior Opto-Mechanical Design Engineer with strong experience in precision mechanical design and optical system integration for complex optoelectronic products.
What You’ll Do- Develop new opto-mechanical products from concept and detailed design through engineering drawings, vendor selection, evaluation, prototype builds and production
- Design precision mechanical assemblies for silicon photonics (SiP) and optoelectronic devices
- Design and integrate free-space optical assemblies, miniature optics, optical mounts and precision alignment mechanisms
- Perform detailed tolerance analyses and tolerance stack-ups for optical and mechanical assemblies
- Design for micron and sub-micron optical alignment, including active and/or passive alignment approaches
- Design fixtures and tooling to support prototype builds through production
- Integrate mechanical, optical and electrical components into complex optoelectronic systems
- Maintain, test, evaluate and improve existing opto-mechanical products and assemblies
- Lead mechanical and opto-mechanical design reviews
- Work closely with optical, photonics, electrical, manufacturing and other cross-functional engineering teams
- Support contract manufacturers and suppliers during prototype builds, manufacturing ramp and production
- BS in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline with 5+ years of relevant experience
- Strong hands-on opto-mechanical design experience, combining precision mechanical design with optical system integration
- Experience in detailed design, development and validation of mechanical assemblies from prototype through manufacturing
- Experience designing mechanical mounts, interfaces and assemblies for optical components such as lenses, mirrors, lasers/light sources, detectors, fibers or similar optical components
- Experience with precision optical alignment, including active and/or passive alignment; micron or sub-micron alignment experience is highly desirable
- Experience with free-space optics and miniature optical assemblies
- Strong experience with GD&T, detailed tolerance analysis and tolerance stack-ups
- Experience with DFA and integration of complex optoelectronic devices
- Understanding of how mechanical tolerances, thermal effects, vibration and assembly variation can affect optical performance and alignment
- Experience with DFM and transitioning designs from concept/prototype into manufacturing
- Knowledge of optoelectronic assembly processes such as die attach, wire bonding, active alignment and hermetic sealing
- Experience working with suppliers and/or contract manufacturers
- Experience with silicon photonics, photonic integrated circuits (PICs), LiDAR, lasers, cameras or other precision optical sensing systems
- Knowledge of geometric optics and semiconductor packaging/assembly
- Experience with injection molding and precision machining
- Experience with thin/thick-film ceramics and HTCC
- Experience designing prototype or production equipment for optoelectronic manufacturing
