Mechanical Engineer; Magnet Production & Test

We’re building the real-life flux capacitor:
Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES), a battery that stores electricity in the magnetic field of a superconducting coil.

Our engineering spans four disciplines at once: superconducting materials, megawatt-scale power electronics, cryogenics, and vacuum systems. At Spinor, you'll get your hands on all of them.

You will own consequential hardware architecture and first schematic through bring-up, validation, and field deployment.

We are hiring a Mechanical Engineer to build and own Spinor’s magnet production and acceptance testing capability, developing the highest rate superconductor magnet fab in the world.

• Lead development of high-value manufacturing and test processes, including but not limited to thermal interface deposition, high-power electrical joint development, voltage tap/fiber optic management, and reel-to-reel verification of superconductor material properties
• Design, build, and operate Spinor’s magnet acceptance test assets for both individual pancakes and full magnetic systems, including fixturing, vacuum and cryogenic environments, electrical/thermal systems, and the data-logging backbone

• Design the processes and tools used to integrate superconductor magnets, and own the production build cell: layout, material flow, assembly/process controls and verification, part sequencing/inventory, and technician management

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing, Robotics, Physics, Aerospace Engineering, another relevant discipline, or equivalent practical experience

• Experience designing, building, and operating automated test benches, with proven success integrating precision DAQ systems, instrumentation (sensors, load cells), and active hardware controls (load simulators, power supplies, motors/actuators, process heaters, safety interlocks)
• Strong fundamentals in setting up early-stage assembly cells, designing specialized fixtures and tooling, and experience managing technicians to build and verify complex development hardware safely

You have driven end-to-end product success across an entire hardware lifecycle from initial problem statement through design, build-out, and high-rate manufacturing, and can iterate quickly to de-risk high-impact requirements early in the development cycle.

You bring several of the following:

• Experience developing, qualifying, or automating high-integrity joining processes (precision soldering, micro-welding, adhesive bonding) and deploying non-destructive testing (NDT) methodologies

• Hands‑on experience fabricating, winding, or testing superconducting magnets, HTS tape structures, or high-performance electrical machines, including practical familiarity with precision wire‑handing, insulation application, vacuum resin potting, or cryogenic testing

Relevant experience may include stored energy systems, aerospace manufacturing, battery pack manufacturing, or other technologies.

We do not expect one person to have worked in every one of these areas. We care most about technical depth, learning velocity, and evidence that you can build and ship.
