Commercial Painting Foreman

This full-time role oversees commercial painting crews on a variety of high-profile projects across the San Francisco Bay Area, including office buildings, healthcare facilities, public institutions, and major campus projects. The Painting Foreman leads field personnel, coordinates daily work activities, ensures high-quality workmanship, enforces safety standards, and helps deliver projects on time and within budget. This is a hands-on leadership position that combines crew supervision with active participation in painting and jobsite tasks as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise commercial painting crews ranging from 2 to more than 20 painters on jobsites throughout the Bay Area.
  • Assign daily tasks to crew members and actively monitor work performance to ensure productivity and quality.
  • Train, mentor, and develop painters, apprentices, and new employees, fostering skill growth and professional development.
  • Promote teamwork, accountability, and a positive, respectful jobsite culture.
  • Coordinate daily jobsite activities to maintain production schedules and meet project deadlines.
  • Review project plans, specifications, and scope of work to understand requirements and plan execution.
  • Ensure proper surface preparation, coatings application, and finishing techniques in accordance with project specifications and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Monitor productivity, identify opportunities to improve efficiency, and implement process improvements where appropriate.
  • Conduct regular quality inspections to confirm work meets company and client standards.
  • Verify compliance with project specifications, contract requirements, and manufacturer recommendations for all coatings and materials.
  • Identify deficiencies or nonconforming work, address issues promptly, and implement corrective actions.
  • Enforce company safety policies and OSHA regulations on all jobsites.
  • Conduct toolbox talks and daily safety meetings to reinforce safe work practices.
  • Identify, communicate, and correct jobsite hazards, ensuring a safe work environment for all team members.
  • Ensure proper use, inspection, and care of personal protective equipment (PPE), ladders, lifts, scaffolding, and fall-protection equipment.
  • Coordinate and communicate effectively with Project Managers, General Contractors, facility managers, and clients.
  • Participate in project and coordination meetings, providing accurate field updates and progress reports.
  • Maintain accurate daily reports, including labor tracking, material usage, and jobsite documentation.
  • Communicate manpower, equipment, and material needs proactively to support project schedules.
  • Manage inventory of paints, coatings, and related supplies, ensuring materials are available when needed.
  • Coordinate deliveries and maintain organized staging and storage areas on jobsites.
  • Ensure proper maintenance, safe operation, and appropriate use of company tools and equipment.
  • Travel to various project sites throughout the San Francisco Bay Area as required by project assignments.
  • Perform hands-on painting and related tasks as needed to support the crew and maintain schedules.

Essential Skills

  • At least 5 years of commercial painting experience.
  • A minimum of 2 years of supervisory or foreman experience leading commercial painting crews.
  • Strong knowledge of commercial painting methods, coatings, and surface preparation techniques.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and project documents.
  • Solid understanding of OSHA safety standards and jobsite safety practices.
  • Valid California Driver's License with a clean driving record.
  • Reliable transportation to travel to jobsites throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.
  • Ability to meet client-required experience and drug screening requirements when applicable.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and climb for extended periods while performing job duties.
  • Ability to work on ladders and at heights safely and confidently.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds as part of daily tasks.
  • Willingness to work outdoors and indoors in varying weather and site conditions.
  • Willingness to travel across the Bay Area to support multiple project locations.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and team-building skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced commercial construction environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working on university campuses, public works, healthcare, or institutional projects.
  • Experience managing large-scale summer projects and projects in occupied facilities.
  • OSHA 30 certification.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Proficiency with aerial lifts, scaffolding, and specialized coatings systems.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish communication skills.
  • Experience in construction environments and commercial painting contracting.
  • Interest in developing into higher-level leadership roles such as Superintendent or Project Management.
  • Strong organizational skills for managing documentation, materials, and crew scheduling.
