Hybrid Work Location

This role is categorized as hybrid. The successful candidate is expected to report to the office in Austin, Detroit, Warren, Milford, Mountain View, or Sunnyvale a minimum of 3 days per week. The position can be considered remote if the candidate is in the Seattle, Washington area.

The AI Cloud and Developer Infrastructure organization is responsible for delivering and maintaining the tools and services engineers at GM use every day to do their best work and drive our cars forward. We enhance the entire development process for engineers at GM, ensuring world‑class tools and a seamless experience so they can focus on the problems that matter most in their domain.

Role

We are looking for a Senior Engineer with extensive engineering experience, a passion for developer productivity, and a desire to lead and develop other engineers on the team. The successful candidate will balance business needs, user needs, and engineer growth while delivering impactful solutions.

The Team

Build Platform owns the build system and tooling that supports our AV and AI developers. Using Bazel with an in‑house Remote Bazel Executor and Content Addressable Storage, we provide a premier build experience. Our team continually seeks optimizations and new tooling to improve the speed at which developers iterate, directly impacting the performance of our autonomous vehicles.

Responsibilities
  • Design and implement improvements to our Python development ecosystem and workflows, with measurable impact on engineering productivity.

  • Collaborate with engineers across the company to understand and support their development workflows.

  • Own technical projects from start to finish, making major technical decisions and trade‑offs.

  • Lead complex projects that span multiple teams, partners, and customers.

  • Participate in planning, code reviews, and design discussions.

  • Contribute impactful projects to the team’s roadmap.

  • Thrive in a fast‑paced, collaborative environment where impact is visible and contribution is valued.

  • Drive software engineering best practices within the team and across engineering, creating tooling that encourages and supports these practices.

  • Mentor and up‑level other engineers on the team.

  • Conduct technical interviews with calibrated standards and play a key role in recruiting.

  • Contribute positively to team culture.

Minimum Qualifications (Must‑Have)
  • 3+ years of experience leading and driving large‑scale, cross‑team initiatives.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, related field, or equivalent work experience.

  • Experience working on developer tooling, Python, Docker, etc.

  • Experience leading projects across multiple teams.

  • Attention to detail and a desire to improve processes & systems.

  • Deep understanding of business and operational impact of technology trade‑offs.

  • Passionate about self‑driving technology and its potential impact on the world.

Preferred Qualifications (Nice‑to‑Have)
  • 5+ years of experience designing, building, and operating production systems at scale in the cloud.

  • Experience programming with C++ or Go.

  • Experience with compilers such as Clang, GCC, NVCC, etc.

  • Experience with build systems such as Bazel or Buck.

  • Experience with cloud infrastructure.

Compensation

The compensation information is a good faith estimate only. It is based on what a successful applicant might be paid in accordance with applicable state laws. The compensation may not be representative for positions located outside of New York, Colorado, California, or Washington.

  • The salary range for this role is $170,000 to $240,000. The actual base salary within this range will vary based on relevant factors.

  • Bonus Potential:
    An incentive pay program offers payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.
