About Us

The AI Cloud and Developer Productivity organization is responsible for delivering and maintaining the tools and services that engineering teams at GM use every day to do their best work and drive our cars forward. Our focus is on enhancing the entire development process—how code is checked out, modified, compiled, tested, merged and deployed—so that developers can concentrate on the problems that matter most in their domain.

We are looking for a Staff Engineer with a strong engineering background and experience using a variety of developer tools and technologies. As a team leader, you should care deeply about the technical development of other engineers, balance business and user needs, and identify impactful initiatives with minimal guidance.

The AV Developer Tools team owns AI‑native tools and services that enable consistent and secure agentic workflows with visibility into usage, hosted and on‑device. We set best practices, provide drop‑in libraries, and accelerate AV development by supporting workflows for performance and observability.

• Identify engineering pain points and propose, design, and implement solutions that are reliable, scalable, and maintainable.
• Influence the team’s technical roadmap.
• Evaluate new tools and technologies through PoCs.
• Ship improvements to our AV development tool chains and services with measurable impact on engineering productivity and company metrics.
• Drive software engineering best practices within the team.
• Help steer the engineering culture.
• Guide the team to balance impact and technical debt.
• Mentor and grow engineers on the team.
• Lead by example in accountability and delivery.
• Set boundaries on external requests that do not align with the team vision.

• 5+ years of experience designing, building, and operating production systems at scale in the cloud.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent work experience.
• Experience designing highly scalable, reliable, and maintainable services.
• Proficiency in Go, Python, or other production‑scale languages.
• Strong understanding of Unix/Linux, SSH, and networking fundamentals.
• Attention to detail and a desire to improve processes and systems.
• Leadership and influence skills across the team and organization.
• Ability to research, document, communicate, and defend proposals.
• Effective trade‑off decision‑making and clear communication.
• Ability to manage competing priorities and ship under pressure.
• Passion for mentoring junior engineers.
• Passion for self‑driving technology and its impact.

• Demonstrated application of LLMs, skill sets, and MCPs to coding and review workflows.
• Experience with GCP.
• Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
• Ownership or contribution to open‑source projects.

Base salary range: $180,000 to $284,000. Bonus potential includes incentive pay based on company performance, job level, and individual performance. Actual base salary will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
