Principal Software Engineer – Azure Kubernetes Service
Location:
Mountain View, CA. The Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) Node Lifecycle team manages Kubernetes nodes so AKS customers do not have to. The team ensures that nodes support the latest Kubernetes and Azure features, and remain secure and compliant.
As a Principal Software Engineer, you will work with stakeholders to design architecture, implement key components, ship the product, and support customers. You will lead identification of dependencies, develop design documents, partner to determine user requirements for scenarios, mentor others, and drive product quality across the organization.

- Lead identification of dependencies and development of design documents for a product, application, service, or platform.
- Lead by example and mentor others to produce extensible and maintainable code used across products.
- Leverage subject‑matter expertise of cross‑product features with appropriate stakeholders to drive multiple groups’ project plans, release plans, and work items.
- Hold accountability as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI), mentor engineers, and work on‑call to monitor system/product/service for degradation, downtime, or interruptions.
- Proactively seek new knowledge and adapt to trends and technical solutions that improve availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of products.
- Share knowledge with other engineers.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years of technical engineering experience with coding in languages such as C, C++, Golang, or Rust (or equivalent experience).
- 4+ years of experience working with Kubernetes.
- 4+ years of experience working with Linux.
- Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements, including the Microsoft Cloud Background Check required on hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years of technical engineering experience with coding in languages such as C, C++, Golang, or Rust (or equivalent experience).
- Master’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years of technical engineering experience with coding in languages such as C, C++, Golang, or Rust (or equivalent experience).
Software Engineering IC5 – Typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 – $267,000 per year. In the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City metropolitan area, the base pay range is USD $180,400 – $294,000 per year. Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation.
