Job Description

This is a 4.25‑hour per day, 180‑day per year Para educator position with benefits at Columbia Elementary School. The anticipated start date is September 1, 2026. Hours are 8:30 a.m. – 1:45 p.m., with one hour of unpaid time from 9:00–10:00 a.m.

The successful candidate will work under the direction of the classroom teacher to support students with challenging behaviors. Responsibilities include assisting the teacher in a split classroom setting, supervising students during lunch and recess, and serving as a crossing guard.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience supervising groups of children and supporting students in classrooms.

Minimum Qualifications

Basic WA State Para qualifications and experience working with children in a school setting.

Job Summary

Assist the teacher with planning, preparation, and delivery of a quality instructional program based on state standards, district curriculum, and effective instruction for students with diverse learning needs. Supervise students at recess, in the cafeteria, library, assistance for students riding the bus, and perform crossing guard duties before and after school. May assist with implementation of special education services for students—IEP goals, medical assistance, physical support, and personal care.

Performance

Responsibilities and Essential Functions
  • Assist teacher(s) with the daily supervision of students to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Under the teacher’s direction, administer multiple student tests, collect and maintain diagnostic and test data, update student records, and assess student progress.
  • Assist teacher(s) with monitoring and managing student behavior and progress; share observations with teacher(s) and other professional staff.
  • Assist teacher(s) with implementation of various strategies to address diverse student needs and support individual educational growth and achievement goals.
  • Provide clerical and general classroom assistance, which may include collection and data entry of information, correspondence, copying, filing, and preparation of classroom materials.
  • Administer first aid, medical assistance, physical support, and personal care for children who are ill, medically fragile, and/or disabled.
  • Provide physical assistance for students with special needs such as feeding, toileting, proper lifting and positioning of students in and out of chairs, and assist with the use of specific equipment related to their disability (e.g., materials, assistive technology, visual aids).
  • Track and dispense authorized student medications.
  • Perform crossing guard duties before and after school to supervise and monitor students.
  • Assist with monitoring students in the cafeteria and/or at recess; maintain a clean and orderly environment for student safety and well‑being.
  • Participate in meetings and training to share information, improve employee skills and knowledge, implement school initiatives, and address student needs.

  • Maintain consistent presence at assigned work site and work regular hours as specified.
  • May be subject to reassignment of job duties depending on program, building, and student needs.
