Entry Level Police Officer

Responsibilities

• Patrol an assigned area primarily by car, and occasionally on foot, bicycle or motorcycle, maintaining the public peace and protecting life and property.
• Respond to calls involving automobile accidents, burglaries, theft, robberies, domestic disturbances, assaults and other misdemeanors and felonies.
• Contribute to the apprehension of criminal suspects by conducting preliminary and follow‑up investigations, including contacting and interviewing witnesses and victims, photographing crime scenes, dusting for latent fingerprints, and collecting other evidence while preserving the chain of evidence.
• Prepare criminal investigation reports and testify in court.
• Enforce traffic laws and parking regulations, observe traffic movement, operate radar speed detection units, direct traffic, issue traffic citations and conduct traffic and accident investigations.
• Determine the cause of traffic accidents, distinguishing driver error from mechanical failure.
• Apprehend violators of city laws and ordinances, ranging from advising suspects of arrest to engaging in physical confrontation and use of force, including firearms when necessary.
• Prevent crime by maintaining a high degree of visibility, giving public talks, and identifying abnormal activities through knowledge of city streets and citizen routines.
• Assist in creating a favorable image of the department.
• Perform various duties as assigned, such as transporting prisoners to county jails and serving misdemeanor or felony warrants.

• Conduct follow‑up investigations of crime scenes and traffic accidents.
• Enforce parking regulations, give public talks, provide information, and serve warrants.
• Perform desk and computer work.
• Participate in special assignments including detective work, crime prevention, training officer duties, SWAT, or gang unit work.

• Good working knowledge of city, state, and federal law.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to deal with the public fairly and equally.
• Ability to operate a motor vehicle and exit the vehicle quickly during an arrest.
• Capability to use physical force and undergo continued training.

Any combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job.

• United States citizen or lawfully permanent resident.
• At least 21 years of age.
• High school diploma or G.E.D.
• Current and valid driver’s license, with ability to obtain a Washington State driver’s license within 30 days.
• English reading and writing skills commensurate with general law enforcement duties.
• Pass job related performance aptitude and physical ability tests.
• Pass psychological and truth detection examinations.
• Pass medical examinations by licensed healthcare providers, including a drug screen.
• Driving history free of conduct or violations indicating disregard for safe vehicle operation.
• Criminal record free of convictions related to fitness for police duties.
• No felony convictions.
• Other requirements identified by the Mukilteo Civil Service Commission Rules and Regulations.

• Washington State driver license and driving record acceptable to the city.
• Successful completion of required examinations.

The physical demands include sitting, standing, walking, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling for extended periods. Patrol vehicles are used in varied weather conditions and potentially dangerous traffic situations. The role may involve contact with irate or combative citizens, handling objects up to 100 pounds, and responding verbally and physically to hostility. Vision requirements include close, color, peripheral, depth, and focus adjustment.

The environment may have moderate noise, frequent interruptions, and significant stress.
