What are we looking for?
We're looking for a talented Houdini FX Artist with strong expertise in procedural simulations to join our team. You'll be responsible for creating high-quality simulations that bring realism, scale, and visual impact to a wide range of projects across advertising, broadcast, film and immersive experiences. While simulation is the primary focus of this role, a working knowledge of hair, fur, and cloth workflows will be beneficial when collaborating across departments.
Key responsibilities
FX & Simulation
Using Houdini for a variety of effects, including particles, rigid bodies, soft bodies, destruction, smoke, fire, fluids, and environmental effects.
Develop scalable and production-ready simulation setups that balance artistic quality with technical efficiency.
Optimize simulations for performance, caching, and rendering while maintaining visual fidelity.
Troubleshoot complex simulation challenges and ensure stable results throughout production.
Build reusable procedural tools and workflows that improve team efficiency and consistency.
Pipeline & Technical Development
Work within established production pipelines while contributing to workflow improvements.
Develop clean and organized Houdini node networks and procedural assets.
Collaborate with lighting, rendering, and compositing teams to ensure seamless integration of FX into final shots.
Maintain simulation caches, scene organization, and technical documentation where required.
Hair, Fur & Cloth (Working Knowledge)
Support projects involving basic hair, fur, and cloth simulations when required.
Understand simulation interactions between animated characters, garments, and environmental effects.
Collaborate with grooming, animation, and character teams to achieve production-ready results.
Collaboration
Work closely with modelers, animators, lighting artists, compositors, and creative leads throughout the production lifecycle.
Participate in creative reviews and implement feedback efficiently.
Estimate tasks accurately and deliver high-quality work within project timelines.
Share knowledge, support teammates, and contribute to continuous improvement of studio workflows.
Technical Skills
Essential
Strong expertise in SideFX Houdini with procedural FX workflows.
Experience with particles, pyro, fluids, destruction, RBD, soft body dynamics, Vellum, and environmental simulations.
Strong understanding of SOPs, DOPs, POPs, procedural workflows, simulation optimization, and caching.
Good understanding of rendering and compositing pipelines.
Strong artistic eye, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
Nice to Have
Houdini Digital Assets (HDAs), Solaris/USD workflows.
Python or VEX scripting.
Arnold, Redshift, Karma, or V-Ray.
Unreal Engine and AI-assisted production workflows.
Software Skills
Essential:
SideFX Houdini
Preferred:
Autodesk Maya, Arnold/Redshift/Karma/V-Ray, Foundry Nuke, Python/VEX, Unreal Engine
Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree or Diploma in Animation, Multimedia, Design, or a related field.
3–15 years of experience in VFX, Animation, Advertising, Gaming, or Digital Production.
Strong demo reel showcasing Houdini FX and procedural simulation work.
