Position Title: Temporary Recreation Specialist - Camp Achieve

Compensation: 17.00

About this opportunity: Camp Achieve is a day camp for children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder between the ages of 6 and 12 that provides innovative programming and therapeutic recreational activities to improve the social, behavioral, and academic skills of autistic students. Recreation Specialists are responsible for developing, scheduling, and coordinating recreational activities for campers.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise the Autism Day Camp scheduling and logistics of recreational activities including collaboration with Autism Day Camp Directors.
  • Develop and/or coordinate camp recreational activities.
  • Assist in supervision of Autism Day Camp staff.
  • Collaborate with Autism Day Camp Counselors to develop individualized recreational activities.
  • Assist in monitoring physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
  • Collaborate with Camp Directors to oversee use and maintenance of camp supplies, equipment, and facilities.
  • Serve as role model to all campers and staff with professionalism and positive attitude.
  • Provide leadership to campers and staff in emergency situations.
  • Assist campers with activities of daily living (ADL). ADL s include, but are not limited to, dressing, toileting, and eating.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.

Dates and schedule: Staff training will occur from May 21 through June 5. The camp program will run from June 8 through July 14. Parent conferences are scheduled for July 16, with final reporting and end-of-program clean-up concluding on July 17. Designated university holidays, including Memorial Day (May 25) and Juneteenth (June 19), will be observed. All staff are expected to work Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., throughout both the training period and the duration of camp.

What

Eligible candidates must:

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship
  • Have proficient spoken and written English skills
  • Be able to stand/walk/kneel for long periods of time
  • Possess strong judgment and critical thinking skills
  • Possess the ability to make independent decisions in a fast-paced environment
  • Possess the ability to problem solve in a proactive manner and make decisions around participant safety and well-being
  • Possess the ability to work cooperatively with others
  • Possess the ability to relate/work well to children with autism spectrum disorders and their families
  • Be willing to participate in staff development activities, as assigned
  • Have the ability to obtain university-approved First Aid/CPR certification, when assigned
  • Have the ability to earn certification in Professional Crisis Management (Training provided during first week of training.)
  • Have the ability to assist campers in the pool (i.e., must be comfortable in the shallow end of a pool).
  • Have the ability to assist campers with physical care (including, but not limited to toileting, dressing, and eating).

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with after school programming, summer camps, or other recreational programming for children with disabilities
