Job Summary

Responsible for performing entry level technical work and related activities associated with the planning, engineering, design, analysis, research, development, testing, construction, maintenance, and operation of Company equipment and facilities.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare required orders and obtain rights of way for system improvements such as capacity enhancements, pole replacements, and recloser reconditioning.
  • Determine customer needs for new services, upgrades, and facility relocations; design facilities to meet those needs and determine any costs to pass to the customer.
  • Contact the Project Design Group for advice on system improvements.
  • Obtain simple easements and consult with Right of Way agents for complex easements.
  • Participate in storm restoration work (assessment of storm damage) upon gaining sufficient field experience; may involve travel within and outside Indiana.
  • Learn and apply AEP Distribution Standards, NESC Codes, OSHA Rules, AEP Accounting Practices, CIAC Rules, AEP Tariffs and Safety Rules and Procedures.
  • Use Microsoft Outlook, Distribution Design Studio, Electric Office, GIS mapping, PDS, EEMS, TLM, STORMS, OPS, JERI, CAD and other Microsoft applications.
  • Collect distribution poles using GPS collection devices.
  • Analyze new designs in DDS software (structural, clearance, electrical) as needed.
  • Create construction prints, material lists, permits, easements, forestry requests, and other documentation.
  • Track project status and progress in Smartsheet schedules.
  • Coordinate with Project Managers and Construction Coordinators.
  • Stake new pole and guy locations ahead of construction.
Qualifications
  • Technical proficiency:
    Associate degree in Electrical/Electronic/Civil/Mechanical Engineering Technology or related field; knowledge of relevant standards, codes, and regulations.
  • Leadership & guidance:
    Work under direction of higher level employees; collaborate with others; provide information and seek assistance.
  • Planning & organization ability:
    Plan work in accordance with AEP standard practices; prioritize routine work; maintain accurate records.
  • Problem solving & initiative:
    Apply technical knowledge to resolve problems; seek opportunities to improve processes and increase knowledge.
  • Communication & interpersonal skills:
    Communicate effectively, orally and in writing; produce technical reports; demonstrate teamwork; interact in an open, friendly manner.
  • Decision making & business awareness:
    Make decisions based on sound judgment; understand organizational roles and responsibilities.
Minimum Requirements
  • Technician Associate (SG 04):
    High school diploma or equivalent and 2 years related utility industry experience
    * or* an associate’s degree in an engineering technology field.
  • Technician (SG 05):
    High school diploma or equivalent and 4 years related utility industry experience
    * or* an associate’s degree with 2 years of related experience.
  • Technician Senior (SG 06):
    High school diploma or equivalent and 6 years related utility industry experience
    * or* an associate’s degree with 4 years of related experience.
  • Valid driver’s license required for all levels.
Compensation

Starting salary ranges:
Technician Associate (SG 04): $54,063–$67,578;
Technician (SG 05): $63,496–$79,369;
Technician Senior (SG 06): $74,551–$93,189.

Physical Demand
