School Bus Mechanic

Fremont School District 79 is seeking a School Bus Mechanic. This position reports to the Director of Transportation and is classified as Non-Exempt for a 12-month work year. The qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent, with a preference for graduates from an accredited trade school or technical college in Diesel/Automotive Mechanics. Proven experience in heavy-duty vehicle maintenance, especially in school bus fleets, is highly valued.

A valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Class B, Passenger (P), and School Bus (S) endorsements is required, with the ability to act as a substitute bus driver in emergency staff shortages. Proficiency with computerized diagnostic software and various shop power tools is necessary.

The School Bus Mechanic is responsible for the comprehensive maintenance, diagnostic analysis, and repair of the district's transportation fleet. The primary objective is to ensure that every vehicle operates at peak safety and efficiency by adhering to a rigorous preventive maintenance schedule, providing students with a safe environment to and from school.

Performance responsibilities include executing a mandatory preventative maintenance program, ensuring every school bus is physically examined and serviced at least every three months. Rigorous pre-inspections are performed to ensure all vehicles meet or exceed state safety lane requirements and Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). Routine checks on critical safety components, including braking systems, steering linkages, suspension, tires, and emergency exits, are also conducted.

Technical repairs on diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, electrical systems, and drivetrain components are performed. Maintenance and repair of specialized equipment such as wheelchair lifts, climate control (HVAC) systems, and electronic safety features (cameras, GPS, and stop-arm sensors) are required. Roadside assistance is provided to respond to on-road breakdowns and incidents, performing field diagnostics and emergency repairs to minimize student transit delays.

Recordkeeping of vehicle maintenance history, fuel usage, and parts inventories is maintained accurately. Shop supplies and parts stock are monitored to ensure necessary materials are available for scheduled services while maintaining fiscal responsibility. All maintenance activities align with federal, state, and district safety regulations. The role also involves self-management, prioritizing work orders based on the morning/afternoon route schedule and fleet availability without constant supervision.

Mechanic apprentices are coordinated, their work quality is overseen, and technical mentorship is provided. Communication with the Director of Transportation, dispatchers, and drivers regarding the daily operational status of the fleet is key.

Physical stamina is required to lift up to 75 lbs, crawl under vehicles, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces. The ability to work in varying weather conditions and in a shop environment with exposure to noise, fumes, and chemicals is necessary. Exceptional organizational skills to meet strict 90-day service deadlines and manage emergency repair priorities are essential.

Salary ranges from $30.00 to $31.10 per hour, with a full benefits package and paid time off. An Employee Assistance Program is also available.
