The purpose of this classification is to perform building, mechanical, and plumbing inspections within Knox County to ensure code compliance.
This is a safety sensitive position that requires a drug screen and the ability to be bonded and deputized through the Knox County Sheriff's Office.
Essential Functions- Performs on-site inspections of residential and commercial structures to determine compliance with adopted ICC Codes and County ordinance.
- Responds to code-related questions by phone or in person.
- Performs special inspections on dwellings to determine specific technical problems and compiles information in report form.
- Reviews plans and specifications to verify information gathered on inspections.
- Performs inspections on abandoned dwellings to determine habitability and feasibility of repair and submits findings in letterform.
- Ensure regular, punctual attendance during scheduled work hours
- Respond to and report immediately if called upon by local, regional or central office supervisors, as part of a coordinated emergency response by the Knox County Mayor’s Office
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Associate degree in Engineering, Architecture, or related field.
- License from the State of Tennessee for Building Inspector, Plumbing Inspector, and Mechanical Inspector must be obtained within one (1) year of employment date.
- ICC Certifications for Residential Building Inspector, Residential Plumbing Inspector, and Residential Mechanical Inspector are required within twelve (12) months of employment.
- ICC Certifications for Commercial Building Inspector, Commercial Plumbing Inspector, and Commercial Mechanical Inspector are required within twenty-four (24) months of employment.
- Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector, Accessibility Inspector and Plans Examiner and other certifications may be obtained as required by the Knox County Building Official.
- Six (6) years’ experience in building inspections, codes enforcement, or related work or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered for employment into the position.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Tennessee Driver’s License.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office.

This position requires the following physical abilities:
- Occasional periods of light physical activity
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time while working on a computer
- Ability to walk a construction site consisting of uneven terrain
- Must wear personal protective equipment (PPE) that may consist of eye protection, ear protection, hard hats, gloves, etc. when visiting construction sites
- Ability to safely climb ladders
- Ability to see and respond to dangerous situations
- Exposure to construction site hazards such as mechanized equipment, timber, hand and power tools, uneven terrain, inclement weather, etc.
