Credentials: Must meet current Tennessee requirements for serving as the principal of an elementary school. Must have active Tennessee Administrators license. Master s Degree required. A minimum of three years of school administrative experience strongly preferred.

Must be able to see, hear, think, and act quickly enough to provide for the safety of children and others. Must be able to work occasional nights and weekends, participate in occasional overnight travel, and provide own transportation during performance of duty.

Must be emotionally mature and able to appropriately handle stress.

Essential Job Functions

The Principal is the instructional leader and chief administrative officer of the school and is responsible for the operation and administration of everything that occurs in that school. This person will assist other principals and district administrators in increasing student learning through collaboration with school level and district level professional learning communities, and working with and supporting the Director of Schools to increase the academic and personal success of each child within Murfreesboro City Schools.

Other Essential job functions include:

  • Model the highest level of positive, professional behavior at all times.
  • Establish a vision for the school and encourage and practice innovation aligned with the district s strategic plan.
  • Promote collegiality within the profession and work with teachers and other staff to help develop professional learning communities within their school and across the district.
  • Supervise the operation and management of personnel by conducting evaluations of all personnel to ensure standards are met, goals are reached, and performance is maximized.
  • Supervise the operation and management of facilities to assure that buildings are adequately maintained and meets district expectations for safety and cleanliness by coordinating with appropriate MCS supervisors and directors.
  • Submit recommendations to the Director of Schools regarding the appointment and dismissal of personnel.
  • Observe all rules and regulations relative to the operation of public schools as established by law and contained in the Rules, Regulations, and Minimum Standards of the Tennessee State Board of Education and required by other regulatory agencies.
  • Follow local Board policies and directives of the Director.
  • Serve as the spokesperson for the school, and administer the school s information and community relations program, and business/school partnerships.
  • Compile and analyze data from a wide variety of sources for the purpose of ensuring student achievement and safety, complying with established policies and procedures, and/or monitoring program components.
