Job Description

Elementary Art Teacher.

General Statement of Job

Under limited supervision, the art teacher is responsible for developing in each student an interest in and the ability for creative expression in visual terms, using skills and techniques consistent with school guidelines. The teacher fosters aesthetic understanding and appreciation, discovers and develops students’ artistic talents, and instills discipline, teamwork, and creativity.

Responsibilities
  • Evaluate student performance and provide constructive feedback.
  • Develop and implement lesson plans that meet educational standards.
  • Teach visual arts content, including drawing, painting, lettering, and art history.
  • Instruct students in citizenship and basic subject matter as required by state law.
  • Provide instruction that develops aesthetic concepts and allows qualitative judgments about art.
  • Demonstrate techniques in activities such as drawing, painting, and various acrylic methods (dry brushing, staining, layering, under painting, monoprinting).
  • Apply principles of design and modern artistic theory.
  • Offer individual and small‑group instruction to adapt to diverse intellectual and artistic abilities.
  • Teach proper care, use, and storage of tools and equipment; control materials to prevent loss or abuse.
  • Prepare progress reports and maintain inventory records for instructional materials.
  • Plan and present art displays and exhibitions for the school and community; may sponsor outside exhibits.
  • Maintain professional competence through in‑service education and self‑selected growth activities.
  • Communicate with parents and school counselors regarding student progress.
  • Participate in curriculum development and other programs, such as after‑school art clubs.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive learning environment.
  • Encourage student participation and engagement in music activities.
  • Ensure proper care of materials and equipment.
  • Effectively communicate classroom needs to personnel.
  • Arrive on time and maintain scheduled work hours.
  • Accept assistance, advice, and guidance from supervisors, striving for continuous improvement.
  • Share ideas, plans, and materials with colleagues.
  • Maintain confidentiality of professional information unless required by law.
  • Comply with state and local regulations on controlled substances, tobacco, alcohol, and dress.
  • Adhere to conduct standards: refrain from harassment, profanity, or sexual contact with students.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher.
  • Valid South Carolina teacher’s certificate in art or visual arts education.
  • Proficiency in at least one art medium.
Physical and Communication Requirements
  • Requires sedentary work with occasional walking or standing; may handle up to 20 pounds.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to read and prepare reports.
  • Capacity for logical thinking, independent judgment, and interpersonal communication.
  • Proficient in computer use for data entry and reporting.
  • Color discrimination and manual dexterity for artwork creation.
