Job Summary /Basic Function

The School of Music at Middle Tennessee State University invites applicants for an 11-month full-time, temporary (non-tenurable) faculty position (#131280) as the assistant director of bands at the rank of lecturer. This is a one-year temporary appointment. The contract may be renewed annually based on available funding, demonstrated need, and satisfactory performance as assessed by annual evaluations. The appointment start date is August 1, 2026.

The successful candidate will serve as a key member of the athletic band leadership team, carrying out assigned responsibilities under the supervision of the Director of Bands and the Associate Director of Bands in support of the standards and mission of the MTSU band program. Primary responsibilities include serving as the assistant to the Director of the Band of Blue marching band, as director and conductor of the basketball and volleyball pep bands, and as the conductor and artistic director of the MTSU Concert Band each spring.

The School of Music may assign additional responsibilities based on the candidate’s strengths.

The MTSU School of Music serves approximately 250 undergraduate and graduate music majors pursuing Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Arts, and Master of Music degrees, as well as many students pursuing specialized minors. For more information, visit (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below)..

Required Education

A master's degree in music is required by the appointment date.

Special consideration will be given to candidates with a doctoral degree and to those who demonstrate an ongoing commitment to contemporary pedagogical practices across higher education and K–12 contexts.

The links must be active and working at the time of application submission and remain so until the search is complete.
