Job Title
Water Department Inspector
Job DescriptionDEPARTMENTAL PROMOTIONAL ONLY
This position is considered a Safety-Sensitive position. Applicants who pass the interview process will be subject to drug and alcohol testing.
The purpose of this position is to conduct inspection on the materials, construction, and installation of water distribution, re-purified water distribution and wastewater collection systems lines or storm water quality controls to insure they meet specifications and requirements.
Examples Of Essential DutiesEssential Functions:
- Must be able to communicate with others in spoken and written English to ensure the safe and efficient operations of the business.
- Reviews and analyzes engineering construction drawings and related documents/ specifications and identify areas of non-compliance with the City ordinances.
- Visits construction sites to inspect and photograph storm water treatment facilities installation to ensure the City's storm water ordinance is being followed in accordance with the approved plans. Visits existing properties with stormwater management controls to determine how well controls are functioning, identifying problems or deficiencies in operation and maintenance. Informs property owners and managers of the problems and responsibility to correct them.
- Visits construction sites to inspect newly installed water, re-purified water, sewer lines, and appurtenances at construction sites to ensure conformance to plans and specifications.
- Checks construction regularly to ensure contractors are installing utilities per state mandated design criteria and maintains daily records and generates quantitative progress reports.
- Determines the need for change orders and makes appropriate recommendations.
- Inspects raw materials delivered for installation.
- Documents any changes from original design and maintains as-built drawings on all projects.
- Maintains project status/activity reports.
- Performs other work as assigned.
Physical Demands:
- Performs work that involves walking or standing most of the time.
- Involves exerting up to 20 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and the use of fingers, hands or limbs on repetitive operation of mechanical or electronic office or shop machines or tools within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
- Requires High School diploma or GED equivalent.
- Must have four (4) years of experience in the construction, surveying, operation or maintenance of water distribution and wastewater collection systems or storm water systems.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
- Must be able to obtain valid Grade II Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection Certificates of Competency within 18 months of the date of employment if the position is designated for inspection of water, re-purified water and sewer, OR;
- A bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, engineering or environmental science or a similar field, from an accredited college or university may reduce experience requirement from four to two years.
- Stormwater system inspectors must possess or be able to obtain certificates of completion for the TDEC/UT Level I EPSC training and the TDEC/UT Stormwater Control Measures Inspection and Maintenance training.
- Must have a valid driver's license.
