Job Description

This role supports electric distribution projects throughout the Middle Tennessee area, with a strong focus on field staking, data collection, and line design. The Utility Staker / Line Designer spends most of their time in the field gathering information, working with property owners on easements, and translating field conditions into accurate distribution designs using GIS and CAD tools. This position is well suited for professionals with staking, line design, GIS mapping, utility locating, or distribution field experience who want to grow their skills on the design side of the utility industry.

Responsibilities

+ Perform field staking activities for electric distribution projects, ensuring accurate placement and documentation of poles, lines, and equipment.

+ Collect detailed field data to support overhead electric distribution line design and system improvements.

+ Create, update, and maintain utility designs directly within ArcGIS and related mapping platforms.

+ Meet with landowners and work collaboratively to obtain easement agreements and signatures in a professional and respectful manner.

+ Coordinate closely with internal design staff and field personnel to clarify project requirements and resolve issues.

+ Utilize GPS equipment and mapping tools to gather precise field information for use in design and documentation.

+ Occasionally assist with pole loading and structural analysis efforts using SPIDAcalc to ensure safe and compliant designs.

+ Profile field conditions and support the preparation and revision of design documentation in AutoCAD as needed.

+ Support ongoing distribution system improvement and expansion projects throughout the assigned service territory.

+ Serve as a professional representative of the project team when interacting with customers, property owners, utilities, and other stakeholders.

+ Apply knowledge of utility construction standards and drawings to ensure designs align with applicable guidelines and codes.

+ Contribute to a collaborative team environment by sharing field insights with engineering and design teams to enhance project outcomes.

Essential Skills

+ Minimum 1-2 years of experience in utility line design, staking, distribution field work, or a closely related role.

+ Experience working with electric utilities, electric membership cooperatives (EMCs), cooperatives, or electric distribution systems.

+ Ability to read and interpret utility construction standards, drawings, and related technical documents.

+ Strong communication skills with the ability and willingness to interact directly with property owners regarding easements.

+ Comfort working outdoors in varying field conditions and traveling throughout the assigned territory.

+ Familiarity with GIS platforms and a willingness to learn and use design-related mapping software such as ArcGIS.

+ Demonstrated experience with staking and easement processes in a distribution environment.

+ Understanding of utility design and line design concepts for overhead distribution systems.

+ Valid driver's license and access to a reliable personal vehicle for travel to project sites.

Additional

Skills & Qualifications

+ 2+ years of utility line design, staking, distribution field work, or related experience is preferred.

+ Experience using SPIDAcalc for pole loading and structural analysis.

+ Experience drawing and editing within ArcGIS or similar mapping platforms.

+ Proficiency with AutoCAD or similar CAD software for preparing and updating design documentation.

+ Familiarity with the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) and its application to distribution design.

+ Experience working with engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) project environments.

+ Exposure to utility mapping software and GIS-based utility design workflows.

+ Desire to build advanced distribution design skills and grow within the power delivery and engineering space.

+ Ability to collaborate effectively with both field and engineering teams in a strong, team-oriented environment.

Work Environment

This position offers a combination of field and design responsibilities, with approximately 70-80% of the time spent in the field and 20-30% spent on office or computer-based design work. The role supports a flexible arrangement where field visits are followed by mapping and design tasks that can be completed from home. Travel is primarily across the Middle Tennessee region, with occasional overnight stays depending on project needs.

The work involves regular use of GPS equipment, ArcGIS and other GIS tools, and AutoCAD for design documentation. The environment emphasizes collaboration between field personnel and engineering staff, exposure to a wide variety of distribution projects across utilities and cooperatives, and opportunities to develop advanced design skills within a supportive team culture.
