Overview
The Licensed Practical Nurse position is located at the Tennessee Valley Healthcare System (TVHS) - Murfreesboro - TN campus in Geriatric Extended Care (8B).
Responsibilities- Provide direct nursing care to adult and geriatric patients according to nursing standards and Medical Center policy and procedure.
- Assist with data collection for outpatients and new admissions.
- Observe, report, and document signs and symptoms of patient's general condition; participate in care planning and progress reporting to RNs and physicians as appropriate.
- Attend patient care conferences and contribute to the Nursing Care Plan and/or Interdisciplinary Plan of Care.
- Provide patient teaching, including education for common disease processes, medications, and prescribed treatment regimes as directed by the RN or physician.
- Perform pre-operative and post-operative care for patients, including those with special procedures; ensure informed consent is present prior to procedures and diagnostic tests.
- Assist in evaluating psychological and educational needs of patients; address age-specific considerations (e.g., geriatric vision/hearing considerations).
- Administer, document, and monitor commonly prescribed medications as permitted by local policies; document patient response and report any changes to the RN or MD/DO.
- Recognize emergencies, initiate emergency measures when indicated, and seek assistance as needed; respond to equipment failures and safety hazards promptly.
- Collaborate with RNs/MDs/DOs to orient/train less experienced staff and to promote optimal patient care delivery; participate in maintaining patient care standards and safety.
- Support and participate in diagnostic procedures as required by facility policies and procedures; assist with documentation of vital signs and other clinical observations.
Basic Requirements:
- Citizenship:
Citizen of the United States. Noncitizens may be appointed when recruitment of qualified citizens is not possible, in accordance with applicable guidelines. - Education:
Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or accredited by the NLNAC (or equivalent) at the time the program was completed. Verification may be obtained from the State approving agency or NLNAC. See program requirements for exceptions related to military healthcare education and specific VA guidelines. - Licensure:
Full, active, current, and unrestricted licensure as a licensed practical or vocational nurse in the United States (State/Territory/Commonwealth or District of Columbia). - English Language Proficiency:
Proficient in both spoken and written English as required by applicable regulations. - Grade Determination:
Additional qualification criteria apply for GS-3 to GS-6 levels, including experience requirements and demonstrated nursing competencies. See VA qualification standards for details.
