C. York Veterans' Administration Medical Center – Murfreesboro, Tennessee is recruiting for a Nursing Assistant / Community Living Center (CLC West).

Qualifications

Applicants pending completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements
  • Citizen of the United States; non‑citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with applicable regulations.
  • Six months of general experience in a nursing setting, or one year of education above high school with courses related to the NA occupation, or completion of an intensive training program of less than one year.
  • Proficient in spoken and written English as required by VA Handbook 5005.
  • Grandfathering provisions apply to existing NAs on effective date; former NAs must retain qualification status or requalify.
  • Creditable experience must demonstrate knowledge, skills, and abilities associated with current practice and be documented on application or resume.
  • Part‑time experience is creditable according to its relationship to full‑time workweek.
  • Successful completion of 2–4 years of education above high school with courses related to nursing care, or a bachelor’s degree with 24 semester hours of health‑care courses.
Physical and Mental Requirements

This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity; prolonged walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing; transferring patients and objects; exposure to infectious patients and contaminated materials; occasional exposure to combative patients; and the ability to work effectively in stressful situations.

Duties
  • Utilize glucose monitoring machine for readings and report deviations to appropriate health‑care staff.
  • Provide direct care for complex veterans and make observations of subtle changes in resident condition; take action accordingly.
  • Document care given and observations on appropriate tools or forms.
  • Administer tracheostomy care, suctioning, patient intake/outcome reports, nursing procedures such as enemas, catheterization, colostomy care, skin care, dressing, and monitoring.
  • Work with patients on small group activities per treatment plan, promote independence, and participate in treatment planning meetings.
  • Use equipment to promote self‑care, provide patient information to the treatment team, and maintain a clean, safe environment.
  • Serve as the unit safe patient handling liaison, preceptor, mentor to other NAs, orient health‑care team members, and act as a member of the unit base counsel.
  • Manage patient behavior and intervene appropriately, initiating basic life support when necessary.
  • Preferred experience:

    Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) – two (2) years experience.
  • Work schedule:

    Full time – 6–12 hour shifts plus an 8‑hour shift per pay period; rotating weekends and holidays.
  • Pay:
    Competitive salary with regular increases; possible above‑minimum rate for higher qualifications.
  • Paid Time Off: 37–50 days per year (13–26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays); credit toward leave accrual from prior work or military experience.
  • Parental Leave:
    Up to 12 weeks paid after 12 months of employment for birth, adoption, or foster care placement.
  • Child‑care subsidy:
    Eligible after 60 days for full‑time employees with total family income below $144,000 (up to 25% of qualifying costs up to $416.66/month).
  • Retirement:
    Traditional federal pension (5‑year vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% VA contributions.
  • Health insurance:
    Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long‑term care; programs transferable into retirement.
  • Special salary rate: V785.
