Summary

The LPN – Primary Care GS‑7 position is located at the Alvin

C. York VA in Murfreesboro, TN.

Qualifications
  • United States Citizenship:
    Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
  • Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate state agency and accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) at the time of program completion.
  • Condition of employment:
    Active, full, current and unrestricted licensure as a Graduate Licensed Practical or Vocational Nurse in a state, territory, or commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia.
  • Prior license revocation, suspension, denial, restriction, limitation, or probation status may only be considered in accordance with regulations issued by the Under Secretary for Health or designee.
  • Proficient in spoken and written English; qualification may be based on 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d) or the Grandfathering Provision per VA Qualification Standard.
  • Grade: GS‑7 for select, complex LPN/LVN positions as determined by each health‑care facility.
  • Employees at this grade level must meet all performance standards for the GS‑6 level, including at least one year of qualifying experience at GS‑6 or equivalent.
  • Knowledge and skill to conduct complex practical nursing duties, including assessment, documentation, triage, medication administration, diagnostic procedures, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Ability to exercise independent technical judgment and to provide patient‑centered care while working under general supervision of an RN and/or MD/DO.
  • Leadership responsibilities: may serve as leader or co‑leader in a nursing unit or for a specific patient group.
  • Knowledge base that incorporates current patient care data into patient health plans and nursing interventions.
  • Physical requirements:

    must be able to lift 30 lbs or more, twist and/or bend, stand and/or walk almost constantly.

All applicants must be physically and mentally able to perform efficiently the duties of the position, including lifting 30 lbs or more and twisting and/or bending, standing and/or walking almost constantly.

Duties
  • Serve under the supervision of the Nurse Manager in the Primary Care clinic while demonstrating independent technical judgment.
  • Apply complex practical nursing knowledge to carry out the most complex assignments within Primary Care clinics for a veteran population.
  • Use critical thinking and independent judgment to carry out procedures such as medication administration, wound care, blood draws, EKGs, nebulizer treatments, and joint injections.
  • Assess, record, and report vital signs, neurological signs, weight, and blood glucose levels; triage and prioritize patient needs.
  • Collaborate with the Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) and interdisciplinary services to develop, implement, and evaluate patient care plans.
  • Document and communicate health status and care activities in accordance with VA nursing practice standards and protocols.
  • Provide education to patients and families about disease management and anticipated care plans.
  • Act as a resource for specialized procedures and clinic equipment (e.g., PYXIS, EKG, Car Lift); assist with equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Serve as a leader and role model for co‑workers, guiding clinical practice and promoting clinic efficiency.
  • Assist the Nurse Manager with planning and organizing specialized unit projects such as mobile flu clinics, injection clinics, and walk‑in clinics.
Preferred Experience

Previous primary care experience.

Work Schedule

Monday‑Friday (days) or as needed by the service.

Compensation

Competitive salary with regular salary increases; higher step rate may be determined based on qualifications or special needs of the VA.
